Feedback and privacy

While you work with DataMind Oda in a chat, you can leave feedback on it: a remark about the whole chat, or a rating on a single reply. This page covers remarks and what can leave your computer with them; ratings on replies are covered in Rate Oda's messages.

Send a remark about a chat

  1. In the message box, type /feedback followed by your remark, then send it. For example: /feedback the plan step felt slow.
  2. Oda keeps the remark exactly as you typed it. Only the spaces at its ends are trimmed, and nothing inside the remark is read as a command, so /feedback /plan felt slow records that text as written.
  3. Oda confirms with Feedback recorded for session {sessionId} and, on the next line, Anonymous user: {userId}.

Its menu line reads Record feedback about this session. Sent with no text at all, or with only spaces, the command asks for text: Feedback text is required. Usage: /feedback <text>. In the Oda web app, a bare /feedback opens the feedback dialog instead.

The /feedback command and the feedback dialog are left off in the desktop app and the VS Code extension; both appear in the Oda web app. Chat surfaces and status compares the surfaces.

The feedback dialog

Open the dialog with a bare /feedback, or from the chat: open the … menu at the top of the chat and choose Feedback. Download session log sits in the same menu (see Download a chat log); that row is disabled while a download is already running, and Feedback stays available.

The dialog is titled Submit feedback. It offers seven category chips and a details box:

Every field is optional: a category, a note, both, or neither. An empty submission is accepted and still counts as feedback, because it records your request that the chat be reviewed. A recorded submission shows a short Thanks for your feedback message over the message box.

The details box warns what a submission carries: Add details to help us improve. Your submission will include the current conversation log.

What Oda does with your feedback

What can be uploaded, and when

How uploads behave depends on how Oda is set up on this computer: they can be off, or feedback-only, which is the usual setting. There is no setting that shares chats without feedback.

Important

Nothing about a chat is uploaded until you leave new feedback yourself, and only when uploads are on for this computer.

When uploads are off, nothing is sent, and Oda reports it locally when you record feedback: OpenTelemetry session upload is DISABLED; this feedback is not uploaded through OpenTelemetry. In plain words, your feedback stays on this computer.

With feedback-only uploads, a chat is released by feedback you leave now: a remark, a dialog submission, a rating or note you add or change, or a rating you remove. Feedback that arrives when a chat is forked from another chat does not release the fork; it needs its own new feedback.

When a chat is released, the copy carries the chat's record as it is:

This is a copy of the record, not a cleaned-up one: Oda's own stored credentials are not part of it, but anything that appears in the conversation itself, for example a password pasted into a message, travels with it. Before a record leaves, it passes through any sharing rules set up for this Oda: a rule can withhold a record, and no rule ever changes your saved chat.

Sending is best effort: a record that is still waiting when Oda stops can be lost, and the receiving side counts a record once even if it arrives twice.

This upload channel is separate from the request log your company keeps in DataMind OS; Manage DataMind Oda for your company describes that log.

Questions, answered

Does the model see my feedback?

No. Feedback is not part of any request to the model: it adds no tokens and changes no answer. Oda records it and the chat carries on.

Can I change or withdraw a remark after sending it?

No. Remarks are append-only: there is no edit or withdraw, and a new remark sits beside the earlier one. Ratings on replies can be changed or removed; Rate Oda's messages covers them.

Does the confirmation mean my feedback was uploaded?

No. Feedback recorded for session {sessionId} means the entry reached the chat's log. It is a recording confirmation, not an upload confirmation; sending, when it happens, is best effort.

What can be uploaded from a chat?

The whole record of the chat, as it is: the messages, what its steps ran and returned, the instructions and the folder it works in, the to-do list, the summaries of shortened parts, and the feedback itself. Oda's own stored credentials are not part of it, but anything that appears in the conversation travels with it.

Is anything about a chat uploaded automatically?

No. Asking Oda questions, opening or closing a chat, or having feedback already recorded in it sends nothing by itself. Only new feedback that you leave releases a chat, and only when uploads are on.

What happens if uploads are off on this computer?

Your feedback stays on this computer. It is kept recorded with the chat, Oda notes locally that the upload is off, and nothing from the chat is sent.

Why does the dialog say my submission includes the conversation log?

Because it does: the log of the chat travels with the feedback you leave, so the work the feedback is about is part of the same record. The details box says so before you submit.

Does rating a reply upload anything?

A rating is feedback too: with uploads on, adding or changing a rating, changing its note, or removing it is one of the actions that releases the chat, and removing a rating does not erase the earlier entry; it records the removal. The rating controls are covered in Rate Oda's messages.

Who is Anonymous user: {userId} in the confirmation?

It is the anonymous id Oda keeps for this installation, not your name or your account. Usage reporting and the installation id explains what that id is and how to reset it.

Why did /feedback show no confirmation in a new chat?

In a chat with no messages yet, the confirmation row does not appear, but the remark is still recorded. A submission from the dialog shows its confirmation either way.
