Chat commands, shortcuts and privacy

Use this page to find and organise your chats, work faster with slash commands and the @ picker, keep a chat private, and learn the keyboard shortcuts. To send messages and read answers, start with Ask a Mind.

Find and organise your chats

Your chats sit in the left panel under the Conversations heading, grouped by the day they were last updated: Today, Yesterday, Previous 7 Days, Previous 30 Days and Older. Each group shows the most recently updated chat first. A chat with no title shows as Untitled Conversation.

The list loads 20 chats at a time. Scroll to the bottom, or click Show More, to load more; while a page loads you see placeholder rows. If the list cannot load, it reads Failed to load conversations with Please try again, and a list with nothing in it yet reads No conversations yet with Start a new conversation.

Type in Search conversations... to narrow the list. The Filters button beside it opens the filter panel; the button shows how many filters are applied, and Reset clears them all. In the panel you can choose:

Use List in the same panel to choose what each row shows; switch Time, User and Mind on or off to show the update time, the user avatar and the Mind icon. When both avatars show, a User First or Mind First chip swaps which one is larger. Your choice is remembered in this browser.

To keep only bookmarked chats in view, click the Bookmarks toggle above the list. Hover a chat and click the bookmark icon to bookmark it; the tooltip reads Bookmark or Remove bookmark, and the mark is saved to your account. On a phone, tap and hold a chat to open its menu with Bookmark and Delete.

Chats that other people shared with you sit under Shared with me; see Share and copy a chat.

To search chats, Minds and artifacts from one dialog, press Ctrl+Shift+S or click Search; see Search and navigation. The whole left panel can be hidden and shown again with its toggle (Hide panel or Show panel, Alt+1); see The Minds workspace.

Rename or delete a chat

To rename a chat:

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Click the chevron next to its title in the header.
  3. Click Rename, type the new name and press Enter.

You can also double-click the chat's name in the list. Escape cancels, clicking away saves, and an empty name keeps the old title.

To delete a chat:

  1. Open the chat, click the chevron next to its title and click Delete. In the list, use the Delete control on the row instead.
  2. In Delete conversation?, click Delete.
Warning

Deleting a chat removes it permanently. The confirmation reads "This action permanently removes" the chat's title, then "You cannot undo this."

If you delete the chat you have open, Minds returns you to the Mind's page.

Use slash commands

Type / anywhere in the message box to open the command menu. The menu header reads Commands, and its keys read ↑↓ · Enter run · Tab complete · Esc: ↑↓ move, Enter runs the highlighted command, Tab completes it without running, and Esc hides the menu until the text changes. When nothing matches, it reads No matching command. Enter sends the text as typed.

CommandWhat it does
/compactSummarises the older turns of the chat, so the Mind keeps the gist and frees up room.
/clear-contextMakes the Mind forget the whole chat. Your messages stay visible.
/tag-objectTags tables or transformations for this message. Shown in Warehouse Builder and Lake Builder chats only.
/star-schemaUses the Star schema skill to design and build a semantic model. Shown in Warehouse Builder chats only.

Commands follow the chat: the menu lists only the commands that fit the chat you are in, and /clear-context and /star-schema do not appear in a swarm agent's chat.

Compacting. You can run /compact only in an open chat. Without one, you see Nothing to compact. A chat also compacts itself as it grows long when its Mind has context management on; the notice it leaves in the chat is described in Chat states and recovery.

Clearing context. Type /clear-context and send it. In Clear the assistant's context?, click Clear context. The assistant forgets everything that happened in the chat, your messages stay visible, and the next reply starts from a blank slate; this cannot be undone. The command is refused:

Reference table data with the @ picker

In an Analytical Mind's chat, type @. The Reference table data list shows the tables granted to the Mind. A table appears only if you link it on the Mind's Sources tab with Show in chat @ picker on; a table that is not deployed, is hidden from the picker, or has no readable columns stays out.

  1. Type @ and choose a table. Rows show the table's column count, like 12 col.
  2. Filter the rows, then click or drag cells in one column. The hint reads Click or drag cells in one column; Ctrl+click adds more. On a phone, tap a cell to pick it and tap again to unpick, or use Select all shown.
  3. Click Insert. The button shows your count, like Insert 3 values.

The picked values are inserted into your message as a reference the Mind can query.

Keep a chat private

A private chat is visible only to you. Nobody else can open it, administrators included, even when they view DataMind OS as you. While a chat stays private, administrators cannot investigate errors in it. You can switch it back to Regular at any time, and while you view DataMind OS as another user you cannot change a chat's visibility in either direction.

Note

The Private option appears only if you have Create Private Chat. See Who can do what with Minds.

To start a private chat:

  1. On the new-chat screen, above the message box, click Private in the switch that reads Regular and Private.
  2. Write your message and send it.

Your choice is remembered in this browser, so later new chats you start come up the same way until you change it.

To make an existing chat private (desktop):

  1. Open the chat and click + (its tooltip reads Attach and more) to open the options row.
  2. Click the Regular chip so it reads Private. Click it again to switch back.

On a phone, the visibility switch is in the options drawer that opens from More options.

Questions, answered

Can my administrator read my private chat?

No. A private chat is visible only to you. Administrators cannot open it, even when they view DataMind OS as you; only a share from you opens it to someone. If you need help with an error, switch the chat to Regular first.

Why don't I see the Private option?

You need the Create Private Chat permission. Ask your administrator to add it to your role. See Who can do what with Minds.

Can I make an existing chat private later?

Yes, if you created it. Use the Regular chip in the + options row, as described above. A swarm agent's chat follows its parent chat.

What is the difference between /compact and /clear-context?

/compact summarises the older turns, so the Mind keeps the gist. /clear-context makes the Mind forget the whole chat, but your messages stay visible.

Can I undo /clear-context?

No. The confirmation says it cannot be undone. See Chat states and recovery for the marker it leaves in the chat.

Why can't I see a command like /star-schema in my chat?

Commands follow the chat. /tag-object appears only in Warehouse Builder and Lake Builder chats, /star-schema only in the Warehouse Builder's chat, and /clear-context and /star-schema are hidden in a swarm agent's chat. In an Analytical Mind's chat you see /compact and /clear-context.

Why does the @ picker say "This mind has no tables to reference."?

The Mind has no tables that the picker can show. Link tables on the Mind's Sources tab and keep Show in chat @ picker on; a table that is not deployed or has no readable columns is left out. See Link data to a Mind.

How many values can I insert with the @ picker?

Up to 20 for one message. A counter above the grid shows the running count and the limit, like Amount · 3/20 selected, and the Insert button shows the final count.

Can I recover a deleted chat?

No. Deleting a chat removes it permanently.

Why does voice input not work on my iPad?

Voice input is not available on iPhone or iPad, and it is not supported in Firefox. Use Chrome, Edge or Safari on a desktop, or an Android device.

How do I find an old chat?

Type in Search conversations... above the chat list, or press Ctrl+Shift+S to search chats, Minds and artifacts from the search dialog; see Search and navigation.

Why did my filters reset by themselves?

Filters reset when a chat opens as the result of a link, such as from an artifact or the search dialog, so the list never hides the chat you are opening.
