Link data to a Mind

An Analytical Mind answers questions only from the tables you link to it. Use the Sources tab to choose those tables, the columns the Mind may read and how much data it learns from each one.

Link a table to a Mind

  1. Open Minds, select the Analytical Mind and open Sources.
  2. Click Edit Sources. If the Mind has no tables yet, the button reads Add Sources. The editor is titled Edit Data Sources and reads "Select and configure tables for this mind".
  3. Search with Search tables... and click a table to select it. The search matches table names, column names, table types and Lake source names, and the toolbar badge counts the tables you have selected.
  4. Click the arrow at the start of the table's row to expand it.
  5. Under Pass Data Type, choose how much data the Mind learns from the table.
  6. Under Columns, tick the columns the Mind may read. Select all and Deselect all change the whole list at once.
  7. For Sample Data, click the fingerprint icon next to each column whose values matter.
  8. Click Save Changes. While the save runs, the button reads Saving....

The Data Sources header counts the tables you have linked, for example "5 source(s) connected". Use Selected to show only the tables you have picked. Deselect all clears the whole selection, and Deselect shown clears the tables a search is showing. The tables are grouped into Warehouse and Lake columns, and each row shows its pass data type and its column count.

When you save, the Mind's access follows your selection: unselecting a column removes its access, and removing a table removes that table's access only.

Important

The columns you select decide what the Mind can query. As the editor notes: "The columns you select do more than train the AI. The AI SQL user is granted access to exactly these columns and nothing else."

Choose how much data the Mind learns

Each selected table has a Pass Data Type with up to three options:

Sample values are a small set of rows, fewer for very wide tables. Tables with personal-data columns pass no sample values.

SettingWhat it doesDefault
Pass Data TypeSets how much data the Mind learns from the table.Structure Only
ColumnsSets the columns the Mind's query account can read.Every column except platform audit and history columns, such as Insert DateTime, Update DateTime, Valid From, Valid To and Is Latest
FingerprintShares a column's top 200 distinct values. Available only with Sample Data, on selected columns.Off
Show in chat @ pickerShows or hides the table in the @ picker in chat.On

Switch off Show in chat @ picker to hide a table from the @ picker. The Mind can still query that table. See Chat commands, shortcuts and privacy.

Changing Pass Data Type away from Sample Data resets the ticked columns to every column that can be granted.

Retrain sources

Outside edit mode, click Retrain after a table's structure or values change, so the Mind relearns its tables. Its tooltip reads Retrain sources. When it finishes, the Training completed message reads "Mind sources have been successfully retrained." If it fails, Training failed shows the reason.

Leave edit mode without saving

Click Exit in the toolbar or Cancel to leave without saving. Every change you made since you opened the editor is reverted. After a successful Save Changes, the tab shows the saved tables.

Questions, answered

Why don't I see a table in edit mode?

Edit mode lists only deployed tables whose permission groups include the Mind's owner role. A Mind owned by the admin role sees every deployed table. Ask an administrator to give the owner role access, or use a Mind owned by a role that already has it. See Who can do what in the Lake and Warehouse permissions and row-level security.

Why is Full Data missing for my table?

Full Data is offered only for very small tables. For larger tables, use Sample Data instead. It shares the top 200 distinct values of each column you mark with the fingerprint.

Do the selected columns limit what the Mind can query?

Yes. The Mind's query account can read exactly the selected columns and nothing else. When you untick a column and save, that access is removed.

What does the fingerprint do?

With Sample Data, the fingerprint shares that column's top 200 distinct values with the AI, so the Mind learns real codes and names. You can mark only selected columns.

A table shows Not deployed. What should I do?

Redeploy the table in the Lake or the Warehouse, or remove it from the Mind. Until then the Mind can't read it. Messages you may see are listed in Minds troubleshooting.

When should I click Retrain?

Click Retrain after a table's structure or values change, so the Mind relearns the table. You can click it only outside edit mode.

Why can't I select an audit column?

Platform audit and history columns are never offered for a Mind, so you cannot tick them, and Select all skips them. They stay outside the Mind's access.

Can I link more than 100 tables to a Mind?

No. A Mind can have up to 100 tables. When you reach the limit, remove a table before you select another.

What happens when I remove a column or a table?

Unselecting a column removes the Mind's access to it. Removing a table removes that table's access only, and other linked tables keep their columns. Both apply when you click Save Changes.
