Once the Claude Desktop extension is connected, Claude can ask your Minds questions, look at the tables they can read and run read-only queries for you. This page covers what to ask and the limits you may hit; to set up the extension first, see Claude Desktop.
Ask a Mind a question
Ask which Minds you can use, for example "Which DataMind Minds can I use?" Claude lists the Minds your roles can reach, with their names and descriptions.
Ask your question and name the Mind, for example "Ask the Sales Mind for last month's revenue by region."
Wait for the answer. Claude starts the work as a job and checks it again and again until the answer is ready.
To carry on in the same conversation, ask a follow-up question. Claude keeps the earlier messages as context and sends your question to the same Mind.
Tip
Questions and queries need the Mind name exactly as Claude lists it, including capital letters. Listing training cards is not case-sensitive.
Query data and export results
Ask which tables the Mind can read, for example "Show me the tables of the Sales Mind." Claude lists the tables and their columns, with types and primary keys.
Ask Claude to run a query on that Mind, for example "On the Sales Mind, total revenue by region for last month." Claude writes the SQL and runs it.
Read the result. A query returns at most 50 rows.
To get more rows, ask Claude to export the query as CSV, TSV or JSON. An export returns up to 10,000 rows and Claude writes them to a file on your computer.
Browse and search training cards
Ask which training cards the Mind has, for example "What training cards does the Sales Mind have?" Claude lists them by folder.
To look for something specific, ask Claude to search the cards, for example "Search the Sales Mind's training cards for the refund policy." Claude returns the most relevant passages with their folders.
A long question or query becomes a job. Claude checks it in steps of up to 25 seconds and shows the answer when it is ready.
A finished answer or query result stays available for one hour. After that, Claude cannot fetch it, so ask again.
You can stop only the jobs you started. Ask Claude to cancel the question or query, and Claude confirms with "Job cancelled.". For someone else's job, Claude replies "You don't have permission to cancel this job.".
Permissions
Your account needs these permissions to use Claude with a Mind.
Permission
What it lets you do through Claude
View Minds
Ask questions, run queries, export results, look at a Mind's tables and search its training cards.
View Training Cards
List a Mind's training cards by folder. You also need View Minds.
Claude uses only the Minds your roles can reach, and inside a Mind it sees only that Mind's data: table lists, schema browsing and queries are all scoped to the named Mind, not to everything your own account can reach. If a Mind you need is missing from the list, ask your administrator to check its owner role and permission groups. See Roles and permissions and Who can do what with Minds.
Limits and edge cases
A query returns at most 50 rows; an export returns at most 10,000 rows. A result that reaches its cap is marked as cut.
Only queries that start with SELECT or WITH run. For anything else, Claude replies that only SELECT queries are supported.
Claude refuses a query that contains a comment, more than one statement, wording that changes data, or a query longer than 100 KB. The refusal starts with "Query rejected".
A query runs for one named Mind, under that Mind's Query Identity, and reads only the tables that identity can read. A query that reaches outside them is refused with "Query rejected: disallowed schema reference"; a query whose table names cannot be read is refused with "Query rejected: could not resolve tables". See Mind settings and Link data to a Mind.
Builder Minds are not available through Claude. A question to one returns "Warehouse Builder Minds are not available over MCP in v1." and a query returns "Warehouse Builder Minds are not queryable over MCP in v1." (Lake Builder Minds are refused the same way). Use them in DataMind OS instead: Warehouse Builder and Lake Builder.
Queries return up to 50 rows. Ask Claude to export the query as CSV, TSV or JSON to receive up to 10,000 rows; if the data is still too large, ask for totals or groups in the query, so it returns fewer rows. When a query reaches the cap, Claude receives "Results limited to 50 rows."; a result of exactly 50 rows, or exactly 10,000 for an export, is marked as cut even when nothing was left out.
Can Claude change data?
No. Only queries that start with SELECT or WITH run through Claude, and a query that tries to change data is refused.
Why does Claude say "Query rejected: disallowed schema reference"?
The query reads tables that the Mind cannot read. Ask Claude to list the Mind's tables and query only those. If the table you need is missing, link it to the Mind on its Sources tab. See Link data to a Mind.
Why does Claude refuse my query that has a comment in it?
DataMind OS does not run SQL comments in queries sent through Claude. Remove the comment lines and ask Claude to run the query again.
Why can't Claude use my Warehouse Builder or Lake Builder Mind?
Builder Minds are not available through Claude, so questions and queries to Warehouse Builder and Lake Builder Minds are refused. Use them in DataMind OS instead. See Warehouse Builder and Lake Builder.
Why does Claude say a Mind is only available from an editor?
Slides AI, Custom Visual AI and Model AI work only inside their editors, so Claude cannot ask them questions. Claude replies that the Mind is only available from its editor, for example "The Model AI mind is only available from the DataPrism semantic model and report editors." Use them there: Write slides with AI, Model AI or Custom visuals and the visual library.
An answer takes a long time. Can I stop it?
Yes. Ask Claude to cancel the question or query, and Claude confirms with "Job cancelled.". You can cancel only the jobs you started. A finished answer stays available for one hour, so read it before that or ask again.
Claude says "You don't have permission to do this." What do I do?
Your account lacks a permission the request needs, usually View Minds or View Training Cards. Ask your administrator to add it to your role. See Roles and permissions.
Where does an exported file go?
Claude writes the file on your computer, using the rows DataMind OS returns. Choose CSV, TSV or JSON when you ask for the export.
Can Claude read and search a Mind's training cards?
Yes. Claude lists the cards by folder when you have View Minds and View Training Cards. Search by meaning covers only cards set to Vectorized. See Train a Mind with training cards.
Why does Claude say a Mind is not found or not accessible?
Claude shows "Mind '<name>' not found or not accessible". Check the name. Questions and queries need the exact name that the Mind list shows, so ask Claude to list your Minds again and copy the name. If the Mind is still missing, your roles cannot reach it, and your administrator needs to check its access.
