Chat display settings

Settings > General has four rows that decide how a chat shows its work: how much of a turn's process expands, whether steps group, how much usage detail appears and where links open. For the rest of the chat, its models and commands, see Chat with Oda.

Find the four rows

Chat adds four rows to Settings > General:

RowDefaultWhat it decides
Work detailsCompactHow turns and steps expand by default.
Group tool calls and thinkingOnWhether steps collapse into groups and finished turns into a summary line.
Performance & usageDetailedHow much performance and usage information shows.
Open chat links inBuilt-in browserWhere HTTP(S) links in chat open.

Changes apply to your open chats at once and are saved on your computer.

Set how much of the process expands

The Work details row sets how turns and steps expand by default. The options are Compact (the default), Detailed and Expanded.

If an older version saved the value Normal for this row, Oda now reads it as Detailed; Normal is no longer offered.

For what each mode shows, see Work details and process folding.

Group the steps or show every one

The Group tool calls and thinking switch is on by default. Its note in Settings reads: Collapse steps into groups and finished turns into a summary line; turn off to show every step as it streams.

The switch lives only in Settings > General; a chat has no grouping control of its own.

Choose how much usage detail appears

The Performance & usage row sets how much performance and usage information shows. Detailed (the default) shows the session statistics and per-turn usage; Compact hides them and keeps only the available output speed and cache-hit under the message box. When the interface uses compact density, the statistics are hidden entirely.

For what the figures mean, see Token usage and context pressure.

Choose where chat links open

The Open chat links in row decides where HTTP(S) links in a chat open. Built-in browser (the default) opens them in a Browser tab in the side panel; New browser tab opens them in your usual browser.

The row appears only while Oda has a built-in browser. Without one it is hidden; links open in your usual browser, and your saved choice is kept.

For file links and line links in an answer, see Links and files in chat.

Questions, answered

Where do I find the chat display settings?

Open Settings > General. The four rows are Work details, Group tool calls and thinking, Performance & usage and Open chat links in.

What are the default values?

Work details: Compact. Group tool calls and thinking: on. Performance & usage: Detailed. Open chat links in: Built-in browser.

What does Work details change?

How turns and steps expand by default in your chats: Compact (the default), Detailed or Expanded. For what each mode shows, see Work details and process folding.

What happened to the old Normal value?

An older version could save the value Normal for this row. Oda now reads it as Detailed; Normal is no longer offered.

What does Group tool calls and thinking change?

With the switch on (the default), steps collapse into groups and finished turns fold into a single summary line. With it off, every step appears as it streams.

Can I change the grouping from inside a chat?

No. The switch lives only in Settings > General; a chat has no grouping control of its own.

What changes when Performance & usage is Compact?

The session statistics and per-turn usage are hidden; only the available output speed and cache-hit stay under the message box. Token usage and context pressure explains the figures.

Why is Open chat links in missing?

It appears only while Oda has a built-in browser. Without one, the row is hidden and links open in your usual browser; your saved choice is kept.

Where do links open?

Built-in browser (the default) opens HTTP(S) links in a Browser tab in the side panel. New browser tab opens them in your usual browser.

Are the choices saved?

They are saved on your computer. If Oda cannot save settings in the browser you are using, a choice lasts for the current session only.

Do the chat settings change the text size?

No. Text size is its own preference: conversation text follows Font size in Settings > General. See Appearance and font size.
