Work details and process folding

While DataMind Oda works, a turn keeps its work behind a fold: a control under your message that opens the turn's steps when you want to read them, and keeps them out of the way when you do not. The rest of the chat is covered in Chat with Oda; the way a conversation is laid out is in The chat transcript.

Read a turn's work

  1. The control heads the turn's work, under your message. While the turn runs, its steps stream in below it, collected into groups; open a group header to look inside it.
  2. When the turn ends, the work folds behind the control. Select it, or focus it and press Enter or Space, to open the work again.
  3. Open a step to see its card; Oda's steps and tool results covers the step rows and their cards.

Groups and their titles

Steps collect into groups by the kind of work. A running group's title is written in the present; once the group closes, the title switches to the past.

Think rows

The three Work details modes

ModeWhat you see
Compact (the default)Summaries only: groups stay closed to their titles, and a settled Think row hides its preview.
DetailedThe summary plus the live detail: a running group shows the current step and its recent steps, and a settled Think row keeps its first-line preview.
ExpandedWhile a turn runs, the bodies show directly, with the group headers out of the way. A finished turn still folds.

The strip after the answer

Questions, answered

What does "Deep diving for 2m 5s" mean?

The turn is still running, and the control is counting the time it has taken so far, in whole seconds. When the turn ends, the control reads Worked, or Took with the final time. A stopped turn reads Stopped, and a failed turn reads Failed.

Why is a finished turn's work already folded?

A finished turn with work to show folds itself behind the control, so the answer reads cleanly. Nothing is lost: select the control above the answer to open the work again at any time.

What do the counts next to the control include?

They count the turn's work up to its final answer: its tool calls, its thinking, the messages that arrived while it worked, and the subagents it used. Messages and subagents appear only when the turn had them. Calls that stay outside the fold, such as a memory save or a question waiting for you, are not counted as tool calls, and each subagent counts as a subagent rather than a tool call.

Why can't I fold this turn?

The fold appears only when the turn is done and there is work to fold. A running turn stays open, and so does a turn that was stopped or failed, or one you sent a message into while it worked. For an older turn, the part of the chat where the turn begins must be loaded before it can fold.

What do the group titles mean?

Each group names the kind of work inside it: reading, searching, editing, commands, code, web searches, web pages, subagents, the plan, questions, or anything else. While the group runs the title is in the present (Reading files); once it closes, the title switches to the past (Read files). A group that mixed kinds lists up to three of them.

Where did the preview on a settled Think row go?

In Compact, a settled Think row hides its preview; in Detailed, it keeps the first line. While the row streams, the preview always follows the newest line. The reasoning is not lost: open the row to read it in full.

Why can't I open a step while the turn is folded?

The layers open from the outside in: open the turn's control first, then the group, then the step. A closed outer layer is not bypassed.

Do my opened groups stay open when I fold the turn?

No. Folding the turn resets its groups and the rows you had opened inside them; the next time you open the turn, its groups start closed again.

What are the small lines under a running group's title?

In Detailed, a running group shows its live detail: the step being worked on, and up to three recent steps, oldest first. The list clears when the group closes.

Why is there a strip of rows after the answer?

Some calls change your saved setup or state, such as saving something to memory. Those rows stay outside the fold, in a strip after the answer, so their controls, such as Undo, stay reachable. Nothing folds the strip, and for screen readers it reads Changes the agent made.

Does folding remove anything from the chat?

No. Folding changes only what you see: the work stays in the chat and comes back when you unfold it.
