Logical models

A logical model is a business grouping of Warehouse tables: the entity they describe, such as a customer, a product or an order. Tables of every kind, from Dimensions and Facts to Dictionaries, Static tables and Views, belong to at least one model, so most teams create their models before they build the tables they group.

Open the models window

In the Warehouse tree toolbar, click New > Logical model. You can also click Add New in the Warehouse header and choose Logical model under Sources & logical models. Create Warehouse objects lists every entry point, and the Warehouse workspace tour covers the tree and its toolbar.

The window lists one card per model, arranged in one to four columns as you widen it.

Create a logical model

  1. In the window, click Add Model.
  2. In the Add a Logical Model form, fill in Model Name and Description.
  3. Click Create. You see the message "Logical Model registered successfully", and the model joins the list straight away.

The fields follow these rules:

FieldRules
Model NameAt least 2 characters. The name is locked once the model exists.
DescriptionRequired, between 20 and 500 characters. A counter next to the label shows the current length.

Clicking Create checks the fields first. If something breaks a rule, the reason appears under the field: a short name shows "Minimum length is 2 characters", an empty description shows "Description is required", and a wrong length shows "Minimum length is 20 characters" or "Maximum length is 500 characters". The button stays greyed out until the form is valid. To leave without saving, click Cancel; your typing is discarded.

Edit a logical model

  1. Point at the model's card and click the pencil (Edit model). The form opens with the title Edit Logical Model.
  2. Change the Description. Model Name is locked and cannot be changed.
  3. Click Save Changes. It stays greyed out until you change something; correct any value that breaks a rule first.

You see the message "Logical Model updated successfully".

Delete a logical model

The trash icon (Delete model) appears on a card only while the usage badge shows 0. When tables still use the model, the icon is not shown.

  1. Point at the card and click the trash icon.
  2. In the Confirm Deletion dialog, click Delete. The dialog warns "Are you sure you want to delete this logical model? This action cannot be undone."
  3. You see the message "Logical Model deleted successfully".

To take a model off many tables at once before deleting it, use Batch edit.

Limits and edge cases

Questions, answered

How many logical models does the window show?

The window loads the first 100 logical models. If there are more, only the first 100 appear here.

What does the number on a card mean?

It is the model's Usage badge: the number of tables that use the model. The badge also controls deletion, because the trash icon appears only while it shows 0.

Where are the Edit and Delete icons on a card?

Point at the card. The pencil (Edit model) and, when the model is unused, the trash icon (Delete model) appear at the top of the card.

Why is Save Changes greyed out?

It stays greyed out until you change something in the form, and it stays that way while a value breaks a rule; fix the field and it becomes available again. While a save is running, the button reads Saving....

Can I delete a model that is in use?

No. The trash icon is not shown while the Usage badge is above 0. Remove the model from those tables first, for example with Batch edit, then delete it.

What happens if I close the form without saving?

Your typing is discarded and nothing is saved. Nothing is stored until you click Create or Save Changes; reopen the form and start again.

Why do I see "No logical models found"?

No logical models exist yet. Click Add Model to create the first one. The window adds the hint "Create a logical model to define core entities and their relationships."

What if the list fails to load?

The window shows "Failed to load logical models" with the reason and a Retry button. Click Retry to fetch the list again.

How do I move many tables into a model at once?

Use Batch edit: edit the Logical Models cell on the rows and save. To assign a single table, open it and choose the model in its General step; see Create a dimension or fact table.
