Batch edit

Batch edit changes settings on many Warehouse tables or transformations in one grid, instead of opening each one. Use it to move tables into a logical model, change who can read a group of tables, or switch off the schedules of a whole model.

Open Batch Edit for the rows you need

The place you open Batch Edit from decides which rows the grid shows.

  1. Choose one of these:
    • Click Batch Edit in the toolbar above the tree to show every table.
    • Right-click a logical model, a semantic source, a table type or a source system in the tree and choose Batch Edit.
    • In a semantic source's popup, open the menu of a source system row and choose Batch edit tables.
  2. Check the popup title. It names the scope, for example Batch Edit · Logical Model, Batch Edit · Semantic Source or Batch Edit · Source System. A table type shows its own name, for example Batch Edit · Dimension. With no scope, the title is plain Batch Edit.

If the popup cannot tell which table type to use, it shows Error: No table type selected with a Close button. Close it and open Batch Edit again from the tree.

The tree and its toolbar are described on the Warehouse workspace tour, the row menus on Right-click menus. To create the source systems and logical models you assign here, see Semantic sources, source systems and logical models.

Switch between tables and transformations

Use the Tables and Transformations tabs to switch modes. Each tab shows how many rows the scope holds. Batch Edit opens on Tables.

While the popup loads, it shows Loading batch edit. If the load fails, it shows Failed to load batch edit data with the reason; close the popup and open Batch Edit again.

Edit many rows at once

  1. Open Batch Edit and choose Tables or Transformations.
  2. Tick the checkbox of each row you want to change.
  3. Edit a cell on one of the ticked rows. When two or more rows are ticked, the same change is copied to the other ticked rows that can take it.
  4. For tables, wait until Details shows Ready for every row you edited.
  5. Click Save. What the result messages mean, deploying a row and retrying a failed row are on Save and deploy Batch Edit changes.
Tip

To change one row only, edit it without ticking any checkboxes, or leave only that row ticked.

A change copies only to rows where that column applies. Query Settings and Status change one row at a time.

Long lists are paged: the grid opens at 50 rows per page, and you can switch to 20, 100 or 500.

Table columns

Some columns appear only when a table in the scope needs them. If the scope holds no tables, the grid shows No tables found. These columns can be edited:

ColumnWhat it does
Logical ModelsAssigns the table to one or more logical models. An empty cell shows Logical models…, and the value copies to the ticked rows.
Source SystemsLinks the table to one or more source systems. An empty cell shows Source systems…. Not available for Views: the cell is locked and says Views do not have source systems.
Permission GroupsSets the groups that can read the table. An empty cell shows Add groups. The admin group is always included.
Refresh Interval and Refresh UnitSets how often the table refreshes. Units are Minute, Hour, Day, Week and Month, and empty cells show Interval and Unit. Only for Dictionaries and for Refreshing or Appending views; other tables keep the cell locked with Available for Dictionaries and Refreshing/Appending views.
NameClick the name to open the table. The comment icon next to it opens Description, where you write the table's description.

These columns are read-only:

Warning

Permission groups decide who can read a table. Check the ticked rows before you save a change to their permission groups.

Transformation columns

While the transformations load, the grid shows Loading transformations; a scope with none shows No transformations found. These columns can be edited:

ColumnWhat it does
ScheduleSwitches the transformation's schedule between Enabled and Disabled.
Synchronize DaysSets how many days each run synchronizes. Only for Fact transformations with a periodic pattern; other rows keep the cell locked with Only for Fact periodic patterns.
Full Reload When Partition EmptySwitches between Enabled and Disabled. Only for Fact transformations with a periodic pattern.
Loop Increment ValueSets the back-fill step size. Shown for the periodic loop pattern, and for the other periodic patterns when Full Reload When Partition Empty is Enabled.
Query SettingsOpens the query settings dialog for the transformation. The cell shows Configure or Configured. Only for Fact and Dimension transformations; other rows keep the cell locked with Query settings are available for Fact and Dimension transformations.

These columns are read-only:

Questions, answered

How do I open Batch Edit for one logical model or source system?

Right-click the logical model, semantic source, source system or table type in the tree and choose Batch Edit. The grid then covers only the tables in that scope, and the popup title names it. From the tree toolbar, Batch Edit covers every table.

Why does Batch Edit show "Error: No table type selected"?

The popup could not tell which table type to use. Click Close, then open Batch Edit again from the tree.

What do the numbers next to Tables and Transformations show?

How many rows the scope holds in each mode: Tables counts the tables, and Transformations counts their transformations.

Why did my edit copy to some ticked rows but not to others?

A change copies only to ticked rows where that column applies: refresh settings reach only Dictionaries and Refreshing or Appending views, source systems never apply to Views, and periodic settings reach only the transformations that have them. Other rows keep their value. Query Settings and Status change one row at a time.

Can I change the pattern of many transformations at once?

No. A transformation's pattern cannot be changed after it is created, so the Pattern column is read-only in Batch Edit. See Transformation patterns and load settings to choose the right pattern when you create a transformation.

How do I switch off the schedules of all transformations in a logical model?

Right-click the logical model in the tree and choose Batch Edit. Choose Transformations, tick the rows you want to change, click the Schedule toggle on one of them so that it shows Disabled, then click Save. The change is copied to the other ticked rows.

Why can't I set source systems for a View?

Views do not have source systems, so their Source Systems cell is locked: Views do not have source systems. Change the source systems on the other table kinds instead.

Why can't I edit Refresh Interval for a Fact?

Refresh Interval and Refresh Unit apply only to Dictionaries and to Refreshing and Appending views. For other tables the cell is locked with Available for Dictionaries and Refreshing/Appending views; set how often the table refreshes from the table's own popup instead.

What is the Semantic Model column?

It shows the semantic sources behind the table's source systems. It is derived from those source systems, so it is read-only and says Derived from source systems. To change it, change the table's source systems.

Why does a cell show only a dash?

The cell is locked, or there is no value for it. Locked cells show - and say why they cannot be changed.

Is there a limit to how many tables one save carries?

Yes. One save carries at most 500 updated tables and 500 removals, and if a table is both updated and removed in the same save the removal wins.

How do I edit a table's description from the grid?

Click the comment icon next to the table's name. The icon appears on hover when the table has no description, and stays highlighted when it has one. Type the text in Description and click Save; Clear removes the description.
