Explore and trace lineage

Use the lineage map to find a table or column, see what feeds it, and see what depends on it before you change it. Focus on one item to narrow the map to its upstream and downstream items, and export the picture to share it.

Find a table or column

  1. Click Lineage in the sidebar.
  2. In the header, type in the search box, which reads Search tables or columns…. Each result shows its layer: Source, Data Lake, Warehouse, Writeback, DataPrism, Minds or Slides.
  3. Click a result to highlight it on the map. If the table sits inside a collapsed data source, the source opens first.

The search looks at table names, the source tables they load from, and their columns. The list shows up to 7 tables and 12 columns at a time. When there are more matches than the list shows, it reads Showing N of M results and adds +N more - refine your search to narrow results; otherwise it reads how many results it found. Column results appear under a Columns heading and name the table each one belongs to.

Matching is case-insensitive and does not correct typos. The highlight on the map fades after about five seconds, so search again to bring it back.

Focus on one table, Mind, model or deck

  1. Click Focus in the header. The three view buttons are Overview, Detailed and Focus.
  2. In the Pick what to focus on overlay, search for the item in the box that reads Search a table, Mind, model or deck…, and pick it.
  3. Set Upstream and Downstream to 1, 2 or All. Both start at All, and the controls over the map show Focus: and the item's name.
  4. Click Back to leave Focus and return to the view you had before, Overview or Detailed.

If you open Focus and pick nothing, click Back to the previous view instead.

Focus lives in the page address: the focused item and the two depths are kept there, so you can copy the address and share the same Focus. Opening it again reopens that Focus; leaving Focus clears it from the address.

You can also start from an item's details panel: open the item and click Open in Focus in the Related items section.

Tip

Set Downstream to All before you change a table. It shows everything that reads from that table.

Read an item's details

Click an item on the map to open its details panel on the right. The panel shows the item's facts, a table's columns, the items connected to it and the button that opens it. The panel and everything in it are described in An item's details in the lineage map.

Open or edit an item

The details panel header has an icon button: Edit table for a table, or Open for a Mind, slide deck or DataPrism model. Hover over it to read its label.

  1. Open the item's details panel.
  2. Click the button.

The button opens:

A collapsed data source has no button. Expand it and open one of its tables. If the item's type has no editor yet, you see Edit not available with Editing {tableType} tables is not yet supported.

Refresh the map

  1. Click the toolbar button whose tooltip reads Refresh lineage data.
  2. Or press Ctrl+R, or Cmd+R on a Mac. On this page the shortcut refreshes the lineage data instead of reloading the page.

When the data reloads, you see Lineage data refreshed successfully. If the refresh fails, you see Error with the reason; when there is no reason, it reads Failed to load lineage data. Please try again. For what to do next, see Observability troubleshooting.

While the orphan data loads, switching to All Tables or Orphans Only shows Orphan nodes data is still loading. Please wait a moment. If it did not arrive, Orphan nodes data is not available yet. Refresh the map and try again.

Use the toolbar

The toolbar buttons are icons. Hover over one to read its label.

ButtonWhat it does

Refresh lineage dataReloads the lineage.
Export as PNGSaves the map as a picture.
Show minimap and Hide minimapTurn the minimap on or off. The minimap is off until you turn it on.

To narrow the map, use the filter panel on the left (Alt+1) to hide node types, source types or data sources. See Filter node types and sources.

Export the map as PNG

  1. Set the view you want to share: Focus, depth and filters.
  2. Click the export icon labelled Export as PNG. The label changes to Generating image... while the picture is made.
  3. Your browser downloads a PNG file. Its name starts with lineage_diagram_ followed by the date and time, for example lineage_diagram_20261015_123456.png.

The picture shows the items on the map when you export it, and it leaves out the toolbar, the minimap and the filter panel. The page confirms with Diagram exported as and the file name. If the map is not ready yet, you see Export failed with Could not find diagram to export. Wait for the map to finish loading, then export again.

Who can use this

The Lineage item appears when your roles hold at least one of View Lake Objects, View Warehouse Objects or View WriteBack Objects. What the map contains for you depends on your other permissions. See Who sees what.

To change what a Mind can use, see Link data to a Mind.

Limits and edge cases

Questions, answered

What breaks if I change this table?

Focus on the table and set Downstream to All. The map then shows every item that reads from it, including Minds, DataPrism models and slide decks.

Where does this Warehouse table get its data?

Focus on the table and look at Upstream, set to All. The map shows the items that feed it, back to their source.

Which Minds use this table?

Focus on the table. The Minds that use it appear in the Minds lane.

Can I search for a column?

Yes. The header search covers table names, source tables and columns. Column results sit under the Columns heading; click one to highlight that column on the map.

How do I share the map?

Click Export as PNG and send the file. The picture shows only what is on the map at that moment, so set Focus and filters first.

The map is too big to read. What do I do?

Focus on the item and set Upstream and Downstream to 1 or 2. You can also clear node types, source types or data sources in the filter panel.

I changed a transformation. Why is the map unchanged?

The map keeps the lineage it loaded earlier, for a few minutes. Click Refresh lineage data (or press Ctrl+R) to load the latest.

Why can't I focus on a data source group?

A collapsed data source stands for several tables. Click Expand in its details panel, or the expand icon on the node, and then focus on one of its tables.

Can I share a link to one focused item?

Yes. Focus keeps the item and the two depths in the page address. Copy the address and send it; opening it reopens the same Focus. Leaving Focus clears it.

Why does Ctrl+R refresh the map instead of reloading the page?

On the Lineage page, Ctrl+R and Cmd+R refresh the lineage data. To reload the page itself, use your browser's reload control.

Why is Open in Focus greyed out?

Hover over the button to read which reason applies: the item is a collapsed data source and you should expand it first, or you are already in Focus on that item.

What does "Edit not available" mean?

The item's type has no editor that the map can open yet; the message names the type. Open the item from its own area instead: the Lake, Warehouse, Writeback, Slides or DataPrism.
