Retry and recover from errors
When a message fails to send, or the assistant's live connection drops, the panel tells you what happened and keeps your text, so you can try again without starting over. This page covers the error card, its buttons and the connection states. To write and send messages, see Write and send messages to the assistant; if you are new to the panel, start with The AI assistant.
Recover a message that was not sent
- When a turn fails, the panel keeps your message in the conversation and marks it Not sent.
- Click Retry to send the message again and run the turn from the start.
- If part of the answer arrived before the failure, Continue also appears; click it to let the assistant finish from where it stopped.
- After you click Retry, the button reads Retried, and the error card disappears once the new run starts streaming.
- If the retry cannot start, a Retry failed toast appears and the card stays, so you can try again. The same applies to Continue failed.
- If a send is refused, your text comes back to the message box, ready to edit and send again.
- If the assistant goes silent and the turn never finishes, the panel closes the turn itself and marks the message Not sent, instead of leaving the message box locked. Click Retry to run it again.
Send anyway on a personal-data warning
When the personal-data check holds a message back, Send anyway is offered while the bypass is available:
- Your role carries the bypass ability, and the message must still be the exact text that was warned. If the button is missing, edit the personal data out of your message and send it again.
- Click Send anyway to send the warned message as it is. The check and the warning flow are described in PII checks in chat.
What the badges above the message box mean
A badge above the message box names what is happening. When none of them applies, the row stays hidden.
- Detecting PII: your message is being checked for personal data before it is sent. See PII checks in chat.
- Responding: the assistant is answering.
- Approval pending: a proposed connector change waits for your decision, and sending waits with it. Decide on the change card first; see Approve or reject connector changes.
- Connection lost: the live connection dropped, and sending waits until it is back.
When the connection drops
- The badge above the message box reads Connection lost, with the line "Trying to reconnect. Sending is paused until the connection is back." It appears about three seconds after a working connection drops, and when the panel knows the cause, it adds it: Connection lost: reason.
- Wait: the panel reconnects on its own and unlocks sending when the connection is back.
- If you send while the connection is down, your message is not lost. Your text comes back to the message box, and you can send it again once the connection returns.
If the panel cannot reach the chat at all, it names the failure it hit, such as Socket connection timeout, Failed to create socket instance, Failed to connect to chat server or Failed to reconnect.
If a cancel finds nothing to stop
If you click Cancel after the answer has already stopped, the panel reports No active stream to cancel. Nothing was stopped, and the message box is ready for your next message.
When the conversation looks empty
- If the first message of a conversation was not accepted, the conversation shows This conversation has no messages, with "The last message was not accepted, so nothing was saved here. Your text is in the box below - edit it and send again." Edit your text and send it again.
- Where a conversation has nothing to show yet, the thread reads "Start a conversation to chat with your assistant."

Questions, answered
My message shows "Not sent". What can I do?
When a turn fails, the panel keeps the message in the conversation and marks it Not sent. Click Retry to run it again, or Continue when part of the answer arrived and you want it finished from where it stopped. If the failure is a personal-data warning and your role carries the bypass ability, Send anyway is offered as well.
Why is there no Continue button on my error card?
Continue appears only when part of the answer already arrived before the failure. If no part of the answer arrived, there is nothing to continue; use Retry to run the turn again from the start.
Why is there no Send anyway on my personal-data warning?
Send anyway appears only while the bypass is available: your role carries the bypass ability, and the message is still the exact text that was warned. If you edited the message, or it was already retried, the button is no longer shown; remove or mask the personal data and send again. See PII checks in chat.
I clicked Retry and the button says "Retried". What happens now?
The panel is replaying your message. The error card disappears once the new run starts streaming, and the assistant answers as usual. If the retry cannot start, a Retry failed toast appears and the card stays, so you can try again.
What do the "Retry failed" and "Continue failed" toasts mean?
The retry, or the continue, did not start. Your message and the card are kept, so read the toast and click Retry or Continue again.
I clicked Cancel and saw "No active stream to cancel". What does that mean?
The answer had already stopped, so there was nothing to cancel. Nothing was stopped, and the message box is ready for your next message.
The panel says "Connection lost". What should I do?
Nothing is needed from you: the panel reconnects on its own, and sending unlocks when the connection is back. The badge adds the cause when it knows it, as in Connection lost: reason.
I sent a message while the connection was down. Did I lose it?
No. Your text comes back to the message box, and you can send it again once the connection returns. If the panel cannot reach the chat at all, it names the failure it hit, such as Failed to reconnect.
The conversation says "This conversation has no messages". What happened?
The last message was not accepted, so nothing was saved in that conversation. Your text is in the message box below; edit it and send it again.
Why did my message turn into "Not sent" on its own?
The assistant went quiet and the turn never finished, so the panel closed the turn itself and marked the message Not sent, instead of leaving the message box locked. Read the message and click Retry to run it again.
