Editor troubleshooting

This page lists the messages the Editor and the data grid show, with what each one means and what to do. Use it when a query, console, chart, grid, export or copy does not behave as you expect.

Find the message

  1. Note the title of the message and the text under it, if there is any.
  2. Find the same title in the tables below. If the row shows a second part, the text must match as well.
  3. Follow what the row says. If the message is not listed, try the action again. If it keeps happening, contact your administrator.

Check your access

The Editor appears in the sidebar when your role has Execute Query or Add/Remove Consoles. Seeing tables in the Database Explorer needs one of View Lake Objects, View Warehouse Objects or View WriteBack Objects. Your administrator sets these on your role. See Editor and Roles and permissions.

Writing and checking SQL

You seeWhat it means and what to do
Checking… or Pending… (the syntax chip in the toolbar)The syntax check is running (Checking…) or waiting its turn (Pending…) on the statement at the cursor. Wait; if the SQL has an error, an alert icon appears and its message shows on hover.
Syntax error detected with the detail, on the alert icon in the toolbarThe syntax check found a parse error in the statement at the cursor. Fix the SQL where the red underline starts; an unclosed quote is underlined at the opening quote. See Write and check SQL.
Syntax is validThe check read the statement at the cursor and found no parse error. Nothing to do; because the check reads syntax only, an unknown table or column still fails when you run the query.
Error reading syntax resultThe check could not produce an answer for the statement at the cursor. Keep typing; the check runs again after you change the statement. If it keeps happening, run the query to see the database's own message.
Formatting SQL… (format button tooltip)The formatter is working on the query. Wait for it to finish; the text updates in place, and a format that cannot complete leaves the text unchanged. Press Ctrl+Z to undo a format.
SQL formatting failed or SQL format worker crashedThe formatter could not reformat the query, so the text stays exactly as it was. Try Format SQL again; the query itself is unchanged and still runs. See Write and check SQL.
No AI suggestion for this position. (in the ✨ AI suggestion list item)The assistant returned nothing for the cursor's position, and no error shows. Keep typing, check that the text has a FROM clause, or press Ctrl+Space again.
AI suggestions on - click to disable or AI suggestions off - click to enable (sparkle button tooltip)The toggle turns AI suggestions on or off, and the choice is kept in this browser. Click the sparkle button to switch it.

SQL Debugger

You seeWhat it means and what to do
No parse tree with Start typing to build the ASTThe AST tab has no parse tree to show for the current text. Write or complete a statement; the tab fills once the editor can read the query. See SQL debugger.
No query structure with Start typing to analyze the queryThe Structure tab has no parsed query to show. Write a statement and check the tab again.
No CST context with Move cursor in the editorThe editor found no completion context at the cursor. Move the cursor into the query text and check the tab again.
No tables, No CTEs, No subqueries, No joins or None at cursorThat section of the Structure tab has no entries for the current query and cursor. Nothing to do; the sections fill as the query has matching parts.
Copied! (shown by Copy all debug info)The debug snapshot is on the clipboard. Nothing to do.
Copy failed (shown by Copy all debug info)The snapshot could not be put on the clipboard. Try again, or use Download debug log and SQL instead.
Download debug log and SQL (button tooltip)Saves the debug snapshot as a text file named sql-debug_ plus the download timestamp. Nothing to do.
Show SQL debugger or Hide SQL debugger (toolbar button tooltips)The button shows and hides the SQL Debug panel beside the editor. Nothing to do.
Expand tree viewer or Collapse tree viewer (AST tab tooltips)Opens or folds the whole parse tree. Nothing to do.
Expand query structure viewer or Collapse query structure viewer (Structure tab tooltips)Opens or folds the whole structure viewer. Nothing to do.

Running queries

You seeWhat it means and what to do
Run Query (Ctrl+Enter+Enter) (play button tooltip)The button runs the statement at the cursor. The doubled "Enter" is the two-step confirm: the first Ctrl+Enter highlights the statement and the second press runs it; a selected block runs at once with one press. See Editor reference: shortcuts and tools.
Enter run · ↑↓ choose · Esc cancel (the Statements list footer)The list that confirms what will run is open: Enter runs the highlighted statement, ↑↓ cycles through the statements, and Esc closes the list. Pick a statement and press Enter, or press Esc to cancel.
Query executed successfully with Returned N rows in XThe run worked. N counts the rows in the first page of the result. The grid footer shows the full total.
Running... (play button state)The query is in flight and the button cannot be pressed again until the run ends. Wait, or click Stop Query.
Executing query (Results tab)The run is in flight and the Results tab is waiting for it. Wait; the grid replaces the message when the run ends.
Loading results (with a Cancel button)The console's last result is being fetched again. Wait, or click Cancel to stop the fetch.
Query execution failed with the database messageThe database rejected the SQL, for example a syntax error, an unknown table or column, or a type error. Read the message, fix the SQL and run again. Use Copy error to copy it.
Query execution failed with Query execution timed outThe Editor stopped waiting after about two minutes. Narrow the query with a filter, a LIMIT or an aggregation, then run it again.
Query execution failed with Request failed with status code 403The run was refused. If a Viewing as banner shows at the bottom of the screen, click Exit: SQL does not run while you view as another user. Otherwise, ask an administrator to check your Editor access.
SQL execution is disabled while impersonating another user; exit the view to run queriesThe run was refused because you view DataMind OS as another user, and SQL does not run in that view. Click Exit on the Viewing as banner, then run the query again. See Impersonate a user.
Query execution failed with Failed to submit query for executionThe run could not start. Try again. If it repeats, contact your administrator.
Execution error with a messageAn unexpected error stopped the run. Run the query again. If it repeats, reload the page.
Query cancelledYou clicked Stop Query and the run stopped. Nothing to do.
Job cancelled successfully (shown under Query cancelled)The stop request reached the server and the run was cancelled for good. Nothing to do; a cancelled run never turns into a failure.
Failed to cancel queryThe stop request was refused, often because the query had already finished. Check the result and run again if needed.
Error cancelling queryThe stop request failed. Click Stop Query again.
Stop Query (stop button tooltip)The button stops the running query; it is greyed out when nothing runs. Click it to cancel the run; a cancelled run is not shown as failed.
Query completed with Query finished while you were awayA run you started finished while you were on another page. Open the console to see the result.
Query failed with a reasonA run you started failed while you were on another page. Read the reason, fix the SQL and run again.
Query is already running (tooltip on Run this query in a history entry)A query is running in this console, so the entry cannot run again yet. Wait for the run to finish, then run the entry again. See Console history and run log.
Query editor crashedThe Editor workspace hit an error. Click Try again to reload it. The rest of the app keeps running. View error details shows the error.
No Results Yet with Execute a query to view results hereNothing has been run in this console yet, or the previous result is no longer available. Run the query.
No data available with This query returned no resultsThe run finished and returned zero rows. Nothing is broken; change the SQL if you expected rows.
Copy error or Copied (on a failed run)Copies the failure message to the clipboard; the label resets after a moment. Paste it where you need it.
No results to clear (tooltip on Clear results & charts)The console has no results or charts to clear. Run a query first; the button clears the results and charts of the console.
Wait for query to finish (tooltip on Clear results & charts)A query is running, so the results cannot be cleared yet. Wait for the run to finish, then click Clear results & charts.
Create an alert from this query (bell button tooltip)Opens a new alert with this query filled in. The button appears only with the Create Alerts permission and is greyed out while the console is empty. If the button is missing, ask an administrator for Create Alerts. See Create an alert.
No table name at cursorYou pressed Ctrl+B, but the cursor is not on a table name. Put the cursor on the name and press Ctrl+B again. See Write and check SQL.

Parameters

You seeWhat it means and what to do
Run blocked with Fill required parameters: <name, …>The run cannot start until every required parameter has a value. Fill in the missing values in the strip below the editor, then run the query. See Query parameters.
Add Parameter (Ctrl+P) or Add parameter (Ctrl+P) (editor toolbar and Parameters strip buttons)Opens the New parameter form; the same form adds the parameter and writes its placeholder into the query. Fill in Name, Type and Value, then click Add.
New parameter (popover title)The add form is open, and it resets each time it opens. Fill in Name, Type and Value; Enter submits.
Search type... (type search placeholder)The Type picker is searchable; the list holds the parameter types and starts on String. Type to filter, then pick a type.
No type (empty type search result)No type matches the search text. Clear the search and pick from the list.
Name is requiredYou tried to add a parameter with an empty name. Type a name.
Must start with a letter or underscoreThe name starts with another character, or contains characters other than letters, digits and underscores. Rename it, for example to start_date.
A parameter with this name already existsChoose another name, or reuse the parameter that is already in the query.
None - add one or use {name:Type} in the query (strip empty state)The strip is visible with no parameters. Click Add parameter, press Ctrl+P, or type {name:Type} in the query.
No parameters provided (strip empty state, locked)The editor is locked to the parameters its host supplies, and none are present. Nothing to do; the screen that opened the editor decides the parameter list.
{n} missing or {n} parameter(s) (count badge)How many parameters the strip holds; it turns red with the missing count while a required value is empty. Open the chips and fill the missing values.
Copy parameter format (chip popover button)Copies the {name:Type} text of that parameter to the clipboard. Paste it where you need the placeholder.
From query, Required or Manual (chip origin labels)Where the parameter came from: found in your SQL, required by the screen that opened the editor, or added manually. Fill the value; a Required parameter keeps the run blocked until it has one.
required or empty (chip value states)The chip has no value; a required chip turns red with a warning icon, an empty optional chip stays grey. Open the chip and fill the Value field.
Value, Remove, Cancel or Save (chip popover)The popover edits the value and saves it, or removes the parameter. Remove appears only for manual parameters; for a parameter from the query or required by the screen, delete its placeholder from the SQL instead.
Parameters info (info icon beside the strip title)Hover for a short explanation of how that screen treats parameters.

Max fields reachedThe drop zone is full. Remove a field from the zone first.

Query analysis

You seeWhat it means and what to do
EXPLAIN ANALYZE ran the chart once with the result cache off; its timing is one run, not the median of a measure. (note under the card)The analysis executed the chart's query a single time, so its timing is one run and not a repeated measurement. Treat the time as one run's; ask for a Measured figure (cache off, several runs, median) when you need a stable timing. See Query analysis.
Only the first part of the plan text is shown. The plan text under the card was cut for display. Read the top of the text first; it carries the summary block and the earliest steps. See Query analysis.
Needs ClickHouse {version}The server's database version is older than Analyzed and What if need; the notice below names the version this server runs and says the mode becomes available after the upgrade. Estimate and Measured keep working for now; if the version could not be read yet, try again in a minute.
the chart has no filter on "…" that an index could useThe what-if estimate could not price a candidate on that table because the chart gives no filter an index could prune with. Nothing to fix; estimate a different table or leave that candidate out.
ClickHouse 26.8 cannot estimate a table read with FINAL (a table with a replacing column or an upsert load); a real skip index still prunes there, so choose it from the plan and measure the chart after it is written.A table read with FINAL cannot be estimated accurately, so the what-if reports what it cannot model. Pick the index from the plan of a real run, write it, and measure the chart after the write. See Skip indexes and Refreshing views.
the hypothetical indexes did not reach EXPLAIN WHATIF (the ClickHouse session was lost); try againThe estimate's session ended before the candidates were priced, so the table ended as failed. Run the estimate again.
estimated no stats or q-error not collectedThe step's table has no statistics, so the plan text cannot estimate its rows and cannot report a q-error for them. Read the actual figures beside them; expect wider margins on those steps.

Export and copy

You seeWhat it means and what to do
Nothing to export with No data to export. The grid has no rows. Run the query again, or clear the filters.
Export failed with a message that contains exceeds Excel's limit of 1048575The full result has more rows than an Excel file can hold. Choose CSV, TSV or JSON.
Export failed with Job not foundThe run behind the result is no longer available. Run the query again, then export. See Export and copy.
Export failed with another messageThe file could not be created. Try again, or choose another format. See Export and copy.
File too large with File size exceeds 10MB limit. The file you picked is larger than the table's upload limit (10 MB by default). Choose a smaller file. See Export and copy.
Upload is only available for Excel format (tooltip on the greyed-out upload button)The table is set to a format other than Excel, so it cannot take an upload right now. Choose Excel in the table's format control where it is offered.
Copy failed with Failed to copy to clipboard.Your browser blocked the clipboard. Allow clipboard access, then copy again.

Tables and the grid

You seeWhat it means and what to do
Drag to reorder row (row grip tooltip)This row can be dragged to a new position. Drag the grip to move the row; press Esc to cancel a drag in progress.
Clear sorting, filters and search to reorder rows (greyed row grip tooltip)Row reordering is paused while a sort, a column filter or the search is active. Clear the sort, the column filters and the search, then drag again.
Row reordering is not available for this view (row grip tooltip)This table does not offer row reordering, for example a paginated, hierarchical or wrapped-text grid, or a screen that turns it off. Nothing enables it; use another screen, or the ordering the screen provides.
Loading... (card view)The cards are still loading. Wait; the cards appear when the data arrives.
No results found (card view)There are no cards to show for the current filters, sort or search. Clear the filters or the search, or check the first page.
Oops... there's no data to display. (card view)The grid has nothing to show, and the screen did not provide its own empty message. Check the filters or the query; some screens replace this message with their own.
Unknown userThe user cell has no name and no email for this value, so it cannot name the person. Treat the cell as missing data; the grid only displays what the row holds.
No emailThe email cell holds no address. Nothing to do in the grid; read the user cell or the row for another contact.
No RoleThe roles cell holds no roles, and it shows in the error colour. Check the row's role assignment where it is managed; the grid only displays it.
No valueThe value half of a value and label cell is empty. Read the label line below it, or treat the value as missing.
No labelThe label half of a value and label cell is empty; a plain value with no object behind it shows it too. Read the value line above it; nothing to fix.
UnknownThe status cell has no value at all. Nothing to do in the grid; the status comes from the row's data.
NULLThe table shows null indicators and the value is null; it shows in italics, muted. Nothing to do; it marks a genuinely empty value. Editor results turn the indicator on for every column.
- (a muted dash, in italics)The value on a comparison card is empty. Nothing to do; empty values do not take part in the hover-to-highlight matching.
+N more (tooltip All Roles (N))The roles cell holds more roles than fit; the tooltip lists them all, with Admin access or Read-only access beside each role. Point at the badge to read the full list.
Expand row or Collapse rowThe hover label of the plus or minus box on a hierarchical row. Click the box to open or close the row.
System columns can't be modifiedThe cell is locked; this is the reason shown when the column does not give one of its own. The cell refuses edits from the grid. Point at its lock icon to read the reason.
No suggestionsWhile you edit a text or free-autocomplete cell, the column has no existing values to suggest. Type the value yourself; it saves like any other edit. See Edit cells and unsaved changes.
Save N unsaved rows or Discard unsaved changes (toolbar tooltips)The table holds unsaved changes: edited cells, removed rows or new rows. Save the rows when you are ready, or discard them to start over. See Edit cells and unsaved changes.
Unsaved Changes with You have N unsaved changes. If you continue, all changes will be reverted. You are leaving a table with unsaved edits. Stay on Page keeps your edits. Discard & Continue reverts them. See Edit cells and unsaved changes.
Pasting data... or Creating new rows...A large paste is filling cells, or creating new rows beyond the last row. The overlay shows Progress, "{current} / {total} rows" and "{pct}% complete". Wait; the overlay closes when the operation finishes, and the grid is busy until then. See Select, copy and paste cells.
Paste failed with a messagePasting into the table failed. Check that the pasted values suit the columns and that the target cells can be edited, then paste again.
Selection mode (toolbar menu trigger)Opens the menu that controls row selection and cell selection. Open it to turn cell selection on or off and to change how rows are selected. See Select, copy and paste cells.
Enable Cell Selection or Excel-like cell selection (Cell Selection option)Turns on spreadsheet-style cell selection for this grid. Choose it, then click a cell to start selecting.
Enables Excel-like cell selection. Click a cell to select it, drag to select ranges, use Ctrl+C to copy, Ctrl+V to paste. (info tooltip)What cell selection does and how to use it. Click a cell, drag to extend, copy with Ctrl+C and paste with Ctrl+V.
Checkbox, Drag, Both or None (Row Selection options)The ways whole rows can be selected in this table: Select rows via checkboxes, Click/drag rows to select, Checkbox + drag selection or Disable row selection. Pick the style you want; the menu lists only the choices the table allows.
Cells, Rows, Distinct, Sum or Avg (selection footer)The figures for the current cell selection: Cells counts selected cells, Rows the rows they cover and Distinct the different values; Sum and Avg appear only when every non-empty selected value is a number. Select cells to see them; they disappear when the selection clears.
Column name copied with the quoted nameThe column name is on your clipboard. Paste it into your SQL.
Copy failed with Failed to copy column name to clipboard.Allow clipboard access, then try again.
Clear all filters (N) or No active filters (tooltip on Clear all filters)N filters are active, counted with an active search as one; click to clear every filter and empty the search box. No active filters means there is nothing to clear and the button is disabled.
Showing {displayedOptions} of {totalOptions}. Use search to narrow results. The column holds more values than the menu shows, so only the first 500 are listed. Type in the menu's Search… box to narrow the list until the value you want appears.
Maximum {n} options can be loaded. Use search or other filters to narrow results. (tooltip on the Max limit chip)The loaded filter values have reached the table's limit, so more values will not load. Narrow the list with Search…, or filter another column first.
No options foundNothing in the column matches what you typed in the filter menu's search box. Clear or shorten the search term with Clear search.
Load more, Loading… or Cannot load more (bottom row of the value list)More values can be fetched, are being fetched, or cannot be fetched for this list. Click Load more to fetch the next values; if it reads Cannot load more, narrow the list with Search… instead.
{label} is not supported here (for example Or is not supported here)This table cannot evaluate that option in a custom condition, so the option is greyed out. Pick one of the enabled options for the condition.
Toggle column visibility (toolbar button tooltip)Opens the panel that shows, hides and reorders columns. Click it; untick a column to hide it, tick it to show it, drag its row to reorder.
N of M visible (panel counter)How many of the listed columns are currently visible, for example 8 of 12 visible. Tick or untick columns in the list to change the count.
Reset to default (reset button in the panel header)Restores the default visibility of every column and clears the custom column order; column widths stay as they are. Click it to bring back the columns the grid starts with.
Drag to reorder (panel footer)Column rows in the list can be dragged to change their order. Drag a column up or down in the list, and drop it where you want it.
Use Ctrl+F12 to find columns faster (panel hint)The go-to-column box finds a column by name, and a hidden column is shown again first. Press Ctrl+F12 over the grid, type part of the name and pick the column.
No columns foundThe column finder (Ctrl+F12) matches no column in this table. Clear the search or check the spelling. Hidden columns are listed too; picking one unhides it and jumps to it. See The data grid.
Hide column (column menu action on a header)Hides that column; the action appears only when the column can be hidden. Click it, and bring the column back from the column visibility panel.
Hide column data types or Show column data types (Editor results toolbar toggle)Switches the type line under each column name in Editor results. Click to hide or show the types.
Auto-fit all columns to content or Reset column widths to defaults (auto-fit button tooltips)The first click fits every column to its content; the next restores the default widths. Click the button again to undo a fit.
View settings (folded toolbar trigger; header View Settings)The toolbar ran short of room and folded its buttons into one menu. Open it to reach auto-fit, the density levels, Filter visibility, Selection mode and Column visibility.
Rows Read:, Bytes Read: or Time Elapsed: (table statistics)The statistics of the last load; the time is in seconds with two decimals. Point at the info icon on a narrow toolbar to read the three lines.
Remove selected rows (select rows first) or Remove N selected rows (remove button tooltip)No row is selected, so the remove button is disabled; select one or more rows and the tooltip shows the count. Click it to remove them; the removal counts as an unsaved change. See Edit cells and unsaved changes.
Select cells in 2+ rows to compare or Compare N rows side-by-side (compare button tooltips)The comparison needs cells in at least two rows; N is the row count once it is ready. Select cells across two or more rows, then click the button. See Compare rows side by side.
Nothing to compare. The comparison has nothing to show for the current selection. Close it, select cells that touch two or more rows, then open the comparison again. See Compare rows side by side.
Top 5 by visible order (badge in the comparison)More rows are selected than the five cards can show, so the first five in the grid's current order are displayed. Compare smaller groups to see the other rows.
Showing N selected rows side-by-side or Showing N of M selected rows side-by-sideThe dialog counts the selected rows, or shows how many of them the cards display. Nothing to do; the count follows your selection.
Tick fields below, then Replace finds the next row whose ticked fields match this card or Find the next row matching the ticked fields (Replace tooltips)Replace cycles through rows that match the fields you ticked; with no field ticked it stays disabled. Tick at least one field, then click Replace.
Select {header} for replace match or Unselect {header} for replace match (field row labels)Clicking or pressing Space or Enter on the field row toggles whether that field takes part in Replace matching. Tick the fields whose values should decide a match.
Drag card to reorder (card handle)The cards in the comparison can be dragged into a different order. Drag the handle to reorder the cards.
Drag {header} to reorder or Remove {header} from cards (field controls)A field can be dragged to reorder the fields, or removed from the cards. Use the drag handle to reorder; after removing a field, bring it back with Restore N hidden field(s).

Questions, answered

Why does every query fail with "Request failed with status code 403"?

If you are viewing as another user, SQL does not run in that view. Click Exit on the Viewing as banner, then run the query again. If there is no banner, ask an administrator to check your Editor access. See Impersonate a user.

Why does my query stop with "Query execution timed out"?

The Editor waits about two minutes for a result and then stops waiting. Narrow the query with a filter, a LIMIT or an aggregation, and run it again. See Run your first query.

Why does Stop Query show "Failed to cancel query"?

The stop request was refused, often because the query had already finished. Check the Results tab, and run the query again if you need to.

What does it mean when the closed consoles list will not load?

The list could not load. Try again later. If it keeps happening, contact your administrator. See Consoles, saving and history.

Why does Console history say "No history available"?

The console has no saved versions yet. A version is recorded when you run the query with changed text. See Console history and run log.

Why won't the chart take a second field on the X-Axis?

The X-Axis holds one field only. Remove the field that is there, then drop the new one. See Charts and pivot.

Why did my saved chart say "Aggregation result could not be loaded"?

The chart's saved calculation could not be restored. Run the query again, then click Execute chart aggregation to rebuild the chart. See Charts and pivot.

Why was my upload refused as "File too large"?

The file is larger than the limit the table accepts. The default limit is 10 MB. Choose a smaller file. See Export and copy.

Why does Ctrl+F12 say "No columns found"?

Nothing in this table matches what you typed in the column finder. Clear the search or check the spelling. Hidden columns are listed too; picking one unhides it and jumps to it. See The data grid.

What do I do when the Editor shows "Query editor crashed"?

Click Try again to reload the workspace. The rest of the app keeps running. The Editor saves console text about a second after you stop typing, so your SQL is normally already saved. If the message returns, open View error details and contact your administrator with the text you see.
