Consoles, saving and history

A console is a saved SQL document in the Editor. Use consoles to keep separate pieces of work apart and return to them later: your text is saved for you, and a console you close can be brought back into the list at any time.

Older versions of a console's text, and its run log, live on Console history and run log.

Create, rename and switch consoles

  1. Click Add Console in the Consoles panel, or press Ctrl+Shift+Q. The console is named New Console, and a Console created message shows its name. If that name is already taken, the new console is numbered: New Console 1, then New Console 2. It goes to the top of the list. If a console cannot be created, the Editor shows Failed to create console.
  2. To rename a console, double-click its name, type the new name and press Enter. Clicking away also saves. Press Esc to cancel. An empty name, or the same name, leaves the console unchanged.
  3. To switch, click a console in the list. Press Ctrl+↓ for the next console and Ctrl+↑ for the previous one. The Editor brings back that console's text and parameters. If a switch fails, the previous console stays selected and the Editor shows Failed to select console.
  4. To reorder, drag a console to a new place in the list. The new order is kept.

While the list loads, it shows placeholder rows labelled Loading console. If it cannot load, it shows Error loading consoles with a Retry button. When there is nothing to show, it reads No consoles found, with a Clear search action if a search filter is active.

Note

After the first successful run of a console that still has a default name, such as New Console 1, the Editor may give it a short name based on its SQL. If that does not work, the name stays as it is.

To run a query in a console, see Run your first query. For every shortcut in the Editor, see the Editor reference.

Saving your text

Your text saves on its own. It is stored about a second after you stop typing, and again when you switch to another console or leave the Editor. Parameters and their values are kept with the console too. See Query parameters.

Use the Save button when you want the current text recorded straight away. Its tooltip reads Save Query (Ctrl+S); while it works it shows Saving..., and a Query saved message confirms it. When the text has not changed since the last save, the button is unavailable and its tooltip reads No changes to save. If saving fails, the Editor shows Failed to save query; with no console selected, it shows No console selected with "Please select a console to save the query."

The Save button records a version of your text even when the text is unchanged since the newest version; a run records a version only when its text differs from that one. To browse a console's versions and what each run did, see Console history and run log.

Close and reopen consoles

  1. To close a console, hover over it and click the X, whose tooltip reads Close Console (Alt+X), or press Alt+X to close the console you are in. Closing does not delete the console: it leaves the list and can be reopened. While a console is closing, its button shows Deleting..., and the other close buttons read Another console is being deleted until it finishes.
  2. If you close the console you are in, the Editor moves to another open console, or opens a new one if none is left. Closing with Alt+X returns you to the console you were in before, when possible.
  3. To reopen a closed console, click the search icon in the Consoles header. Its tooltip reads Find & reopen a closed console.
  4. In Reopen a closed console, type in Search closed consoles... to find a console by its name or its SQL. Choose a Last edited: option, then click the console; its Reopen label shows when you hover. The picker closes and the console returns to the top of the list.

While the closed list loads, the picker shows Loading closed consoles...; with no match, it reads No closed consoles match your search. If the list cannot be loaded, it shows Could not load closed consoles. This picker needs the latest editor backend. If a rename or a close does not go through, the Editor shows Failed to update console.

Limits

Who can see your consoles

Consoles are private. You see only your own consoles, and you cannot share them with colleagues. To hand work over, copy the SQL and send it. The queries your Minds produce are kept as artifacts in Artifacts.

Questions, answered

Do I need to press Save?

No. Your text saves by itself about a second after you stop typing, and when you switch consoles. Press Save when you want a version recorded at that exact moment: it records one even when the text has not changed. See Console history and run log.

What happens to my text if I close a console?

Nothing is lost. Closing only takes the console out of the list. Its text stays saved, and reopening it brings the same text back.

Where did my console go?

You can keep 15 consoles open. When you open another, the oldest open one closes. Find it with Find & reopen a closed console, the search icon in the Consoles header.

Can I delete a console for good?

No. Closing a console only removes it from the list, and you can reopen it at any time.

Can I search closed consoles by their SQL?

Yes. The search in Reopen a closed console matches names and SQL.

Why can't I close this console?

It is your only open console. Open another one first.

Can I reorder consoles?

Yes. Drag a console to a new place in the list. New and reopened consoles still go to the top.

Can I share a console with a colleague?

No. Copy the SQL and send it, or find the queries your Minds produced in Artifacts.
