From a table to a shared report

Use this page to turn one table into a shared report: a semantic model, a measure, a report page and a share with a colleague. Each step links to the page that covers it in full.

Before you start

Create a semantic model

  1. Open DataPrism in the sidebar. On its home page, click New semantic model in the header. In the workspaces panel, you can also click New, then New semantic model.
  2. In the New semantic model dialog, enter a Name. Choose an Owner role. Keep Clear Values under Data mode, or choose Tokenized PII. Choose a Workspace, then click Create.
SettingWhat it doesDefault
NameThe name of the model.None. You enter one.
Owner roleThe role whose Lake and Warehouse tables the model's queries read.None. You choose one.
Data modeClear Values reads original values, PII columns included. Tokenized PII reads tokenized stand-ins for PII columns.Clear Values
Important

The owner role and the data mode cannot be changed after creation. Decide both before you click Create.

  1. Add the table. On the Diagram tab, click Add BI table. Search for the table in the Search core tables... box and select it. Keep or change its Name, then click Add BI table. To add several tables at once, click Select multiple, select the tables, click Next, and then click the button that shows the count, for example Add 3 BI tables.
  2. Mark the core table. Click the table on the diagram to select it. Its toolbar appears. Click Mark core. The core table is the hub of the star schema, usually a fact table. See Relationships and the core table.
  3. Add a measure. In the BI tables panel, right-click the table, choose Add measure, and write an aggregation such as sum("amount"). Press Ctrl+Enter to save it. See Measures.

Build a report page

  1. Click New report in the DataPrism home header, or click New in the workspaces panel and choose New report. Enter a Name, choose the Semantic model, choose a workspace, and click Create report. The report opens in edit mode.
  2. In the Visualizations panel, pick a visual type. A draft appears on the canvas. Drag columns and measures from the BI tables panel into the draft's field zones. There is no add button: the draft becomes a visual in the report once it has the fields it needs. See Visuals.
  3. Press Ctrl+S, click Save, or choose Save now in the save panel beside Exit. Click Exit to leave edit mode; if you have unsaved changes, the dialog "Exit edit mode without saving?" offers Save and exit, Discard and exit and Keep editing. Autosave is Never by default. See Build a report.

Share the report

  1. Click Share in the report header. Under Add people or roles, search for a user or a role. On that person's row, choose Can view or Can edit. Click Save sharing.
AccessWhat the person can doDefault
Can viewOpen the report.Set on every new row
Can editOpen the report and change it.Not set

A semantic model cannot be shared directly. Colleagues reach a model only through the workspace it lives in, so check that workspace access too. See Share a report.

Limits and edge cases

Questions, answered

Do I need a relationship if my model has one table?

No. A model with one table needs no relationship. Once you add a second BI table, the diagram shows a warning, Every BI table must have a relationship., until each table is connected. Every relationship must involve the core table. See Relationships and the core table.

Where is the button to add my visual to the report?

There is none. Pick a visual type in Visualizations and drag fields into it. The draft becomes a visual in the report once it has the fields it needs to run.

Why does New report say there are no semantic models yet?

New report needs a semantic model to build on. When none is available to you, the dialog says No semantic models yet. Create one first to build a report. Create a semantic model first, as in the steps above.

Can my colleague change the report I shared?

Only if you gave them Can edit. With Can view, they can open the report but not change it. See Share a report.

Should I pick Clear Values or Tokenized PII?

Choose Clear Values if queries may read original values, PII columns included. Choose Tokenized PII if queries should read tokenized stand-ins for PII columns instead. The mode cannot be changed later, so decide before you click Create.

Why can I not create a relationship?

Relationships need a core table. Click Mark core on a table first. If the model has no core table, DataPrism shows Core table required and asks you to choose one. Every relationship must involve the core table.

Why is Mark core missing on a table?

A model has one core table. Mark core appears only when no table in the model is marked. To change the core table, click Disable core on the current one, then click Mark core on the new table. See Relationships and the core table.
