Platform updates and the Installer card

On a self-managed installation, Admin > Platform > Updates is where you check the services for newer images, download them ahead of time, and install a DataMind OS update from inside the product. The Installer card below the check table updates the DataMind Installer itself, without restarting DataMind OS.

See Platform for who can open the tab and what a managed installation shows; the same flow from the product side is in Update DataMind OS.

Check for newer images

  1. Open Admin > Platform > Updates. The tab compares each service's image with its registry as it opens, and counts how many services have a newer version.
  2. Read the table. It shows the Service, its Image, the Digest and its State, with services that have an update first. State is one of:
StateWhat it means
Update availableThe image is on this host and a newer one is published. An update recreates this service.
Up to dateThe image on this host is the newest published one.
Not pulledThe image is not on this host yet, so there is nothing local to compare. Pull images downloads it.
Registry errorThe image could not be compared with its registry. Hover the badge to read the reason, then click Check again.
  1. When nothing has a newer image, the page reads Every service is on its latest image.
  2. Click Check again to compare again, for example after a new version is published. The check only compares; nothing is pulled or recreated.

The tab opens with Check For Platform Updates; Pull images, Update DataMind OS and Update Installer need Execute Platform Update.

Pull newer images early

Pull images downloads the newer images and recreates nothing. Run it ahead of a maintenance window, so the update has less to fetch.

  1. Click Pull images. A toast reads Image pull started.
  2. Follow the job in the Services tab job list. Nothing is recreated while it runs.

Pull images is greyed out while nothing has an update or a pull is already starting.

Install a DataMind OS update

  1. Click Update DataMind OS.
  2. Read the dialog before you confirm:
    • It names how many services will be pulled and recreated, and lists them.
    • When a critical service is among them, it warns: Critical services affected: <names> - expect a short outage for everyone.
    • When the interface itself is in the update, it adds: This includes the frontend: the page will reload on its own once the update finishes.
  3. Confirm with Update DataMind OS. A toast reads DataMind OS update started.
  4. Follow the update on the tab. Progress replaces the check table, in the phases Fetching manifest, Pulling images and Recreating services. The Images side shows each download as a percentage, pulled or failed; the Services side shows Wave <n> · <healthy>/<total> healthy with a mark per service. Watch logs live opens the live output in the Logs tab.
Note

You can leave, and even reload, the page while the update runs. A banner at the bottom of every page reads Updating DataMind OS, and View brings you back to the progress.

When the update ends

What you seeWhat it means
DataMind OS updated with a five-second countdownThe update finished and the interface was replaced. The page reloads by itself to run the new frontend. Cancel stops the countdown; Reload now reloads at once. After the reload, a toast reads You are now on the new version.
DataMind OS updated, reading Updated: <names>The update finished. No reload is needed.
DataMind OS update failedThe update did not finish. View on the banner opens the output with the reason.
DataMind OS update cancelledThe job was cancelled before it finished.
Update job no longer trackedThe Installer no longer keeps the job's record, so the page cannot read how it ended. Check the Services tab, then click Check again here.

The result stays on the tab until you click Dismiss. Every message with its cause and its fix is in Troubleshooting.

Update the Installer from its card

The Installer card below the check table updates the DataMind Installer itself, and DataMind OS keeps running. The same update is also available from the Installer's own top bar, described in Update the DataMind Installer.

  1. Click Check again on the card. It compares the running image with the published one and shows Update available or Up to date, with the running and latest digests, and Its compose file changed too when the release also changes the Installer's files. The card also remembers the last outcome: Last update still in progress, Last update completed or Last update failed.
  2. Click Update Installer and confirm in the Update the Installer? dialog. It explains the swap: the Installer pulls its new image and is recreated by a helper container; DataMind OS keeps running, but service controls and DataMind OS updates are unavailable for up to five minutes while it comes back.
  3. Watch the card. While the Installer is replaced it reads Updating the Installer, with the line that service controls and DataMind OS updates are unavailable until the Installer comes back, usually under five minutes.

The card reports each outcome:

Limits and rules

Questions, answered

How do I update DataMind OS without opening the DataMind Installer?

Start the update from inside the product: Admin > Platform > Updates, then Update DataMind OS. The host-side route from the DataMind Installer's Status screen is on Updating.

Who can start an update from inside DataMind OS?

Execute Platform Update covers Pull images, Update DataMind OS and Update Installer; the tab itself opens with Check For Platform Updates. Without the execute permission, you can read the tab but not change anything.

Can I update the DataMind Installer from inside DataMind OS?

Yes. Use the Installer card below the check table; it updates the Installer itself and does not restart DataMind OS. The same update from the Installer's own top bar is on Update the DataMind Installer.

Can I see which services an update will recreate before I confirm?

Yes. The confirmation dialog names how many services will be pulled and recreated and lists them; it also warns when a critical service is among them. In the check table, those are the services marked Update available.

Why is the Installer card missing?

The card appears on installations that include the platform controls. If DataMind manages your installation, Services and Updates are hidden and there is nothing to update here; a Platform address you open directly answers Updates are managed by DataMind. See Platform.

What does "Installer update unconfirmed" mean?

The Installer did not confirm the update within its wait window, so the outcome is not known yet. Check the card again once the Installer answers.
