Sign in to Oda in VS Code

The DataMind Oda extension signs in to your company's DataMind server on its own, separately from the desktop app. This page covers the sign-in and its messages, and bringing your data over from the DataMind Oda desktop app.

To install the extension first, see Oda in VS Code. What the extension adds to the editor is on The Oda extension for VS Code, and reviewing the changes it proposes is on Review Oda's changes in VS Code.

Sign in for the first time

  1. Select Oda: Sign In in the status bar, or run DataMind Oda: Sign In from the Command Palette.
  2. In the Sign in to DataMind Oda box, enter the address of your DataMind server. The box asks for the Address of your DataMind server and fills in the last address you used.
  3. Your browser opens your company's DataMind OS sign-in page. While Oda waits, it shows Finish signing in to DataMind Oda in your browser.
  4. Sign in with your DataMind OS account. When the page reads You are signed in to DataMind Oda. and You can close this tab and return to VS Code., close the tab and return to VS Code.
  5. Oda confirms it with Signed in to DataMind Oda as <name>., and the status bar shows the account: Oda: <name>. Point at it to see the server and the account in its tooltip: Signed in to <server> as <email>.

If your server needs a newer version of the extension, Oda raises the update prompt before the sign-in starts: Your DataMind server no longer supports this version of the DataMind Oda extension. with Version <version> or later is required. Choose Update. The same prompt appears if the server refuses the version during the sign-in.

Your server address

If the address is refused

Oda checks the address before the sign-in starts and refuses it with its own message for each case:

If signing in does not finish

Messages from other parts of Oda are in Troubleshooting.

Staying signed in

Oda keeps the sign-in in VS Code's encrypted secret storage on this computer and renews it with your server while you work. If your computer's credential store is not available, the sign-in lasts only for the current window.

When the saved sign-in can no longer be used, Oda asks for it again, showing Your DataMind sign-in expired. or Your account no longer has access to DataMind Oda. with a Sign In action. If Oda cannot restore your sign-in at all, it shows Sign in to your DataMind server to use DataMind Oda. with Sign In.

Sign out

Select the account in the status bar (Oda: <name>), or run DataMind Oda: Sign Out from the Command Palette, and confirm the modal Sign out of DataMind Oda? with Sign Out. After that, sign in again from the status bar.

The components the extension can download, Python tools, Office engine and Computer use driver, are covered in Components for the extension.

Bring over your desktop app data

On your first runs with the extension, Oda offers to bring your data over from the DataMind Oda desktop app: Bring over your chats, memories, skills, hooks and MCP servers from the DataMind Oda desktop app? The desktop app keeps its own copy. Choose Import, Not Now, or Don't Ask Again.

If your chats cannot come over, the offer asks only about your memories, skills, hooks and MCP servers.

Note

The import only adds. It never replaces what the extension already has: chats come over only while the extension has none of its own, and every other item only when the extension does not have it yet.

When the import finishes, Oda lists what came over: Brought over from the DataMind Oda desktop app: <list>. If there was nothing left to add, it says DataMind Oda already has everything from the desktop app; nothing was copied. If no desktop app data is found, it says No DataMind Oda desktop app data was found in <folder>. If it fails, it says DataMind Oda could not bring over your desktop app data: <cause>.

Questions, answered

How do I know whether I am signed in?

The status bar shows it: Oda: Sign In when you are not signed in, and Oda: <name> when you are, with the server and the account in its tooltip.

What address do I enter?

The address of your company's DataMind server, the same one you use for the desktop app. Oda offers the last address you signed in to as the default. An entry that is not a server address is refused with That is not a DataMind server address.

Oda refused my server address. What do the messages mean?

Each refusal names its own case: a server the extension cannot use, a server that could not be reached, a certificate this computer does not trust, or a server that needs an update first. The list above under If the address is refused gives each message with what to do.

Should I choose Connect Anyway?

Only when you trust the network you are on and you do not have an https:// address yet. Oda warns first: <address> does not use HTTPS, so your sign-in would travel unencrypted. Ask your administrator for an https:// address when possible.

The browser finished the sign-in, but VS Code still asks me to sign in. What do I do?

The sign-in stopped before VS Code received it. Oda shows Signing in timed out. Try again. or Signing in to DataMind Oda failed. Try again. Start the sign-in again from the status bar, and keep the message if it returns.

It says my account does not have access. What do I do?

Your account is missing the DataMind Oda permission. Ask your administrator for Use DataMind Oda; Manage DataMind Oda for your company shows where permissions are set.

Why is Oda asking me to sign in again while I work?

The saved sign-in expired, or your access changed. Oda shows Your DataMind sign-in expired. or Your account no longer has access to DataMind Oda. with a Sign In action; sign in again to continue.

What if my server needs a newer version of the extension?

Oda raises the update prompt before it signs you in, or when your server refuses the version during the sign-in: Your DataMind server no longer supports this version of the DataMind Oda extension. with Version <version> or later is required. Choose Update to update the extension, then sign in again.

How do I sign out?

Select the account in the status bar (Oda: <name>), or run DataMind Oda: Sign Out from the Command Palette, and choose Sign Out in the Sign out of DataMind Oda? modal. Sign in again from the status bar when you want to use Oda.

What comes over when I import from the desktop app?

Your chats, which appear under Past chats, plus your memories, skills, hooks and MCP servers. The MCP servers need signing in again under Settings > Connectors, because their sign-ins stay with the desktop app.

Does the import replace data I already have in the extension?

No. The import only adds. Chats come over only while the extension has none of its own, and anything the extension already has is left as it is. A later import that finds nothing new says DataMind Oda already has everything from the desktop app; nothing was copied.

Where is my VS Code sign-in kept?

In VS Code's encrypted secret storage on this computer; Oda renews it with your server while you work. If your computer's credential store is not available, the sign-in lasts only for the current window.
