Agent presets
An agent preset is the setup a task runs as: the tools and skills Oda may use, the instructions it follows and the model it starts on. You choose a preset when you start a task, and every preset you can use is listed in Settings > Agent presets.
Choose a preset for a new task
- Start a new task and leave it blank. Beside the workspace picker, the preset button shows what the task will run as, for example Standard mode.
- Click it and pick a preset from the menu. Each entry says what that preset is for, and the pick applies to the task you are starting.
- Send your first message. The chat keeps this preset for its whole life: once the first turn has started, the header only shows it, for example Minimal mode, and changing it is refused (
This session has already started).
The presets you can choose
- Standard mode, Relentless, PTC mode, Minimal mode and Creator mode come with DataMind Oda. Choose a mode for a new task shows what each one is for and when to pick it.
- Relentless is built for long unattended work: the chat turns your request into a goal and keeps working until the task is done, it is blocked, or it needs a real decision from you.
- Presets added for you, or created by you, appear in the same menu; in Settings they are listed under Custom. Create and edit agent presets covers making your own.
Set the default for later tasks
- Open Settings > Agent presets. Presets that come with Oda are listed under Built-in; your own and the ones added for you sit under Custom.
- Click the card of the preset you want new tasks to start on. It then carries the New task default tag. Each card's menu also opens Mode details and How to use, which explain the preset and show example tasks; Create and edit agent presets covers changing and removing presets.
- Your next tasks start on it. A blank task you have open switches to it as well; a task that has already started keeps its preset.
The Choose a mode for new tasks switch above the list turns the picker on or off:
- While it is off, new tasks use the Application default, and the default card's tag reads Application default too.
- Switch it back on and the default you saved comes back.
When a preset cannot start
If a preset cannot start, its card stays in the list marked Failed to load, with the reason shown under its name, and Oda leaves it out of the preset menu, so no task can start on it. Choose another preset while it is in that state.
Questions, answered
Is a mode the same as a preset?
Yes. The picker says mode (Standard mode, Minimal mode) and Settings says Agent presets; both words mean the setup a task runs as.
What preset does a new task start on if I do not pick one?
The default shown in Settings > Agent presets: Standard mode until another default is set. A task you pick a preset for before sending uses your pick instead.
Can two tasks run on different presets at the same time?
Yes. The preset belongs to the task: each chat or scheduled run keeps the one it started with, so one task can work in Minimal mode while another runs in Standard mode.
Does the preset decide which model the chat uses?
Not usually. The chat starts on your default model, the one the model picker shows; a preset that names its own model starts there instead. If that model is no longer offered, chats on the preset fall back to the default model, and the card says the model is no longer available.
Why does a preset say Failed to load?
It could not start, so no task can run on it. The card stays in Settings > Agent presets with the reason under its name, and the preset is left out of the menu. Choose another one for now.
Which preset does a scheduled task run on?
Its own: you choose the preset on the task's own form, so a task can run in Relentless while your chats run in Standard mode. Changing your new-task default does not change tasks you already created. Schedule recurring tasks covers the task fields.
Does picking a preset on the new-task screen change my default?
No. That pick belongs to the task you are starting. Later tasks keep starting on your default until you change it in Settings > Agent presets.
What happens to a task I already started when I change the default?
It keeps the preset it started with. The new default applies to blank tasks and to the next tasks you start.
