Usage reporting and the installation id

DataMind Oda keeps one anonymous id for this installation. This page explains what the id is, how to reset it and what usage reporting sends when your company turns it on.

The installation id

Oda creates one anonymous id for this installation the first time it needs one, and keeps it in a file in Oda's home folder on this computer (Oda's home folder and settings files shows where that is). There is no setting for the id, and nothing to set up.

Where Oda uses the id

Reset the installation id

To give this installation a fresh id:

  1. Delete the id file in Oda's home folder. It contains only the id.
  2. Quit DataMind Oda and start it again.

The next start creates a new id, and the old id cannot be recovered. A running Oda keeps the id it started with until it quits, so the new id appears after a restart.

Usage reporting

Nothing is reported by default, and no destination is set: Oda sends no usage reports until your company turns reporting on.

When reporting is on, Oda may send anonymous usage events about this installation to the company's collector.

Usage reporting is separate from the request log your company keeps in DataMind OS, which Manage DataMind Oda for your company describes.

Problems you see in Oda itself are covered in Updates and troubleshooting.

Questions, answered

Is anything reported about me?

Usage reporting, when it is on, sends only anonymous events about this installation. They describe how Oda is used and identify the installation, not you.

Is anything reported by default?

No. Oda sends no usage reports and has no destination set until your company turns reporting on.

Does the installation id contain my name or my computer's name?

No. The id is a random value, never built from your name, your computer's name or your network.

I deleted the id file, but the id did not change. Why?

A running Oda keeps the id it started with. Quit DataMind Oda and open it again: the new id is created at the next start.

Are ids from two computers ever joined?

No. Each installation has its own id, and Oda never joins ids from different computers.

Where does Oda send the id?

With its AI requests to your company's DataMind OS, as a request header, whether or not usage reporting is on; with usage events, when your company turns reporting on; and in the acknowledgement after you leave a remark about a chat.

What happens if the id file is damaged?

If the file no longer holds a valid id, Oda replaces it with a fresh id the next time it needs one. If Oda cannot save the file, it still uses an id for that run. You do not need to do anything.

What happens to the id if I change Oda's home folder?

Oda keeps one id per home folder, so a different home folder gets its own id; the old folder keeps its file. Oda's home folder and settings files shows how the folder is chosen.

What happens to usage events that cannot be sent?

They are dropped. Events wait in memory only, so nothing is kept for a later attempt and Oda does not catch up.

What is inside a usage event?

A short text summary and simple values about how the installation is used. Your messages, files and credentials are not part of them.

Where is the id file?

In Oda's home folder on this computer. Oda creates it automatically, the file holds only the id, and once it is deleted the old id cannot be recovered.

Is usage reporting the same as the log my company keeps of my requests?

No. Usage reporting is separate from the request log your company keeps in DataMind OS; Manage DataMind Oda for your company describes that log.
