An agent preset decides how a chat runs. You can change the presets you own from Settings > Agent presets, and this page is the reference for that editor: the fields it offers, the checks it runs before a save, and what a saved change reaches. For the walkthrough with the buttons, see Create and edit agent presets; for choosing a preset for a chat or a task, see Agent presets.
| Field | What it sets | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Name | The label shown for the preset wherever presets are listed. | Required, up to 64 characters. |
| Description | One line on what the preset is for, shown with the preset. | Up to 500 characters. |
| Instructions | Your direction to Oda under this preset. | Up to 32,768 characters. |
| Capabilities | The preset's own parts, each with a switch. | Only the parts the preset offers appear. |
| Skills | Which skills chats on the preset may use. | One of three choices; see below. |
| Model | The model a preset's chats start on. | A provider and a model, or Use the default model. |
Instructions may insert three placeholders, filled in for each chat: {{cwd}} (the folder the chat works in), {{model}} and {{provider}}. Any other word in double braces is refused when you save.
Skills decides which skills chats on the preset may use. There are three choices:
Skill names are lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, for example review-checklist. If you leave the choice as it is, the preset keeps its own. Some presets set their skills in a way the editor cannot rewrite: the choice then does not appear in the editor, and a save that tries to change it is refused (see the checks below). Skills in chat covers how skills run.
A preset can name the model its chats start on. The choice has two parts, a provider and a model, and both must be set. Pick from the models your company offers, the same list the chat's model picker shows.
The editor checks the whole preset and shows what to fix:
Enter a name for the preset. when the name is empty. The preset name is too long., The preset description is too long. or The preset instructions are too long. when a field passes its limit.Double braces in the instructions can only insert {{model}}, {{cwd}} or {{provider}}. for any other word in double braces. The skill selection must be all, include or exclude, and list only skill names. when the skills choice cannot be saved. The default model must name a provider and a model. when the model choice is incomplete, and The model "<name>" is not available. Choose one of the listed models or use the default model. when the model is not one of the offered ones. The preset has no switchable row "<capability>". when a switch is requested for a part the preset does not offer. The preset has no skill selection a form can change. when the preset's skills were set in a way the editor cannot rewrite.Built-in and installed presets cannot be changed. Duplicate the preset and edit the copy. A duplicate starts from the source preset's setup, and the copy is yours to change. This application cannot save presets.A preset sets a chat up; it is not a boundary on what the chat may do. The limits on what Oda may change without asking come from the chat's access mode and its approvals, which are set per chat (Command sandboxing and approvals). Editing a preset does not touch them.
Deleting a preset removes it for good. If it was set as your default for new tasks, that choice is cleared as well. A chat that ran on it cannot be resumed after it closes.
A preset that cannot start stays in the list with the reason under its name, for example that one of its parts never started or is still waiting for another part to load. New chats cannot use it while it is in that state, but a copy you own can still be changed or deleted.
The name is required and can be up to 64 characters; the description up to 500. The instructions can be up to 32,768 characters, and they may insert only {{cwd}}, {{model}} and {{provider}}. Anything above a limit, or any other word in double braces, is refused when you save.
No. The switches turn the preset's own parts on and off; the editor does not build a new part into a preset. A switch for a part the preset does not offer is refused: The preset has no switchable row "<capability>". To give a preset a part it does not carry, the preset itself is built that way; Preset compositions covers how a preset is put together.
Only with All skills: it keeps every skill, including skills added later. With Only selected, a skill added later stays out until you add it to the list. With All except selected, skills added later stay available unless you list them to hide.
The editor offers a skills choice only when it can rewrite how the preset sets skills. If the preset sets them another way, the choice does not appear in the editor, the preset keeps its own choice, and a save that tries to change it is refused: The preset has no skill selection a form can change.
No. A helper joins the exact version its chat works under: a chat that has already begun keeps the version it started with, and the helpers it starts run under that same version. Your edit reaches chats that start after the save.
No. Instructions you save are added ahead of Oda's own guidance and the context gathered for a chat; they never replace them.
A model choice has two parts, and both must be set. Pick a model from the list, or keep the preset on the default model. An incomplete choice is refused with The default model must name a provider and a model., and a model that is not on the list with The model "<name>" is not available.
No. A save applies live: chats that start after it use the new version. A chat that has already begun keeps the version it started with.
The editor can only save presets where the app is able to write them. On an installation that cannot, a save is refused with This application cannot save presets., and your change is not kept.
