Message actions and editing

Every message in a Minds chat carries its own controls: copy it, edit it and send it again, step between its versions, fold its turn away, or rate the answer. To send messages and read answers, start with Ask a Mind; the message box and its options are described in The message box and its settings.

Copy a message or an answer

  1. Point to your message. A small toolbar appears, with Copy message, Edit message and Collapse turn.
  2. Click Copy message. The button briefly reads Copied!.
  3. To copy an answer, point to the answer and use Copy last response. It copies the last answer text of the turn; where the text refers to a person or a role, the reference is written out as the name.
  4. On a phone, long-press a message and choose Copy.

The toolbar on your message appears when you point at it, and it stays hidden while a response is streaming.

Edit a message and send it again

  1. Point to your message and click Edit message. On a phone, long-press the message and choose Edit.
  2. The form opens with your text in a box that reads Edit message.... Change the text, and adjust what the message carries:
    • Text attached from an answer shows as chips named Attachment 1, Attachment 2 and so on. Click the x on a chip to remove it. See Formatting messages and rich answers.
    • The + menu holds file attachments, the response language, and the Web Search, Auto Compact and Swarm toggles, each shown where the Mind includes it. See Attach files and Excel data to a chat.
    • The model picker sits beside the response mode; models that cannot read the message's files are greyed.
    • The box grows as you type; use its expand control (or Ctrl+↑ and Ctrl+↓) to make it taller or smaller.
  3. Press Enter to send the edited message. To leave without sending, click Cancel (its tooltip reads Cancel and Discard changes · Esc) or press Esc.
  4. The send button turns on when something changes: the text, an attachment or a chip. It stays off while the chat connection is down.

The Mind answers again from the edited message, and the earlier version stays in the chat as another version.

Move between versions of a message

When a message has more than one version, a label on it shows which version you are reading, for example 2 of 3, with the tooltip View message hierarchy. Step between the versions with Previous branch and Next branch beside the message.

Fold and unfold a turn

  1. Point to a message in the turn and click Collapse turn. On a phone, long-press the message and choose Minimize.
  2. The turn folds into a thin line with a + button. Click the button, whose tooltip reads Expand turn, to bring the turn back.

See how a message was sent

Under your message, a settings bar can show how it was sent:

The bar appears when there is something to show: send settings, more than one version, or a benchmark message. On a phone, long-press the message and open Details for the timestamp, model, response mode and version.

Check a response's details

Open Response information under an answer to see how it was produced:

For the chat's overall usage, see Chat usage and stats.

Rate an answer

  1. Under an answer, use the like or dislike control. They show how much feedback the answer has; their tooltips read Like or Unlike, Dislike or Remove dislike.
  2. A like opens What did you like?; a dislike opens Select a reason. When you rate for the first time, one reason is already chosen (Accurate for a like, Bug for a dislike):
    • Like reasons: Accurate, Helpful, Well-explained, Complete, Creative.
    • Dislike reasons: Bug, Instructions, Inaccurate, Incomplete, Inappropriate.
  3. Optional: add Additional details (optional), up to 200 characters, with a counter such as 0/200. The like box reads Share your thoughts...; the dislike box reads Help us improve....
  4. Click Submit. To change the rating later, pick another reason and click Update; to take it back, click Remove.

A control beside the rating buttons shows how many ratings the answer has; open it to read the feedback left on the answer, as a popover on desktop or a sheet on a phone. With none yet, it reads No feedback yet.

Questions, answered

Why can't I edit my message?

Editing is offered only while you can send in the chat and the chat's model is usable. When the model is unavailable, the Edit message control is greyed and its tooltip reads Switch to an available model to edit; switch to an available model and try again. Editing also exits by itself when the conversation starts typing. See Who can do what with Minds.

Why is the send button off while I edit?

It turns on when something has changed: the text, an attachment or a chip. It also stays off while the chat connection is down.

What does "2 of 3" on a message mean?

The message has more than one version. The label shows which version you are reading; step between versions with Previous branch and Next branch, or open View message hierarchy to see every version on one map. The map is described in Search and navigation.

How do I copy a message or an answer?

Point to your message and click Copy message; the button briefly reads Copied!. On a phone, long-press the message and choose Copy. To copy an answer, point to the answer and use Copy last response.

Why did my long message show as a few lines?

A message over 500 characters or more than 10 lines starts collapsed, showing eight lines. Click Show more to read it all, or Show less to collapse it again.

Can I hide a turn I do not need?

Yes. Point to a message in the turn and click Collapse turn, or long-press it on a phone and choose Minimize. The turn becomes a thin line with a + button; click it (tooltip Expand turn) to bring the turn back.

Where can I see which model and settings a message used?

Under your message, the settings bar lists Model, Mode, Thinking, Language, Web Search, Auto Compact and Swarm with their values. On a phone, long-press the message and open Details for the timestamp, model, response mode and version.

Where do I find a response's ID?

Open Response information under the answer. Response ID holds it, with a copy control; the same popover shows Context, Tokens Used and Response Model too.

Can I change or remove a rating I left?

Yes. Open the rating again: pick another reason and click Update, or click Remove to take the rating back. Once you have rated, the tooltips read Unlike and Remove dislike.

What does "From Benchmark" mean on a message?

The message was sent by a benchmark run on this Mind, not typed by a person. See Test a Mind with benchmarks.

I was editing when the connection dropped. Did I lose my edit?

No. The chat shows Not connected: "The chat connection is down. Your edit is kept - try again once it is back." Send the edit again when the connection returns. See Chat states and recovery.
