Use this page while you edit a report: choosing a visual's type, filling its field wells, and using each visual's menu, tools and General settings. To read a report someone shared with you, see Read a report; to create and organise reports, see Build a report.
In edit mode the side panel shows the report's panels, including Visualizations, Filters, BI tables, Layers and Bookmarks; see Bookmarks for the last.
Click one visual on the page. The Visualizations panel opens its Fields, Visual and General tabs, and the visual's own controls appear when you hover it.
What the Visualizations panel shows
Fields fills the visual's field wells. Visual holds everything that shapes how it draws; see Format a visual. General holds the tile's size, title, background, effects and limits.
With nothing selected, the panel shows the report's settings instead, such as Show logo and Default theme; see Themes and presentation.
With several visuals selected, the panel shows {n} visuals selected. Select a single visual to edit its fields and formatting. and keeps the type picker disabled. Select one visual to edit.
A new visual lands on the canvas marked Draft and stays a draft until it has the fields it needs; then it becomes part of the report.
A visual that lives in the Filters panel is always a slicer, and the panel says so: Filters-panel visuals are always slicers. Its Fields tab is not offered; use the Visual tab. See Filters, slicers and interactions.
Adding a Custom visual needs the Author DataPrism Custom Visuals permission; a refused pick reads You do not have permission to author custom visuals. See Custom visuals and the visual library.
Fill a visual's field wells
With the visual selected, open Fields. It lists the wells the visual's type has; a new visual starts as a Bar.
Drag a column or measure from BI tables into the well you want, or tick the field in the tree: a tick adds it to the first well that takes it, and unticking it removes every copy.
You can also drop a field straight onto the visual; the tile reads Drop a field or measure here to bind data.
While you drag a new field over a well that already holds fields, a line shows where it will land: the field's upper half places it just above that field, its lower half just below, and the well's empty space adds it last. A field already in the well is reordered the same way, and the KPI Comparison slot holds one replaceable field, so a drop there replaces what it holds.
For the wells each type shows, and for renaming, summarising or removing a field, see Visuals.
A drop that cannot land answers with one of these messages:
Date fields cannot go in a slicer group, with Use a date slicer on its own for a date range. A date column cannot join a Slicer group.
Measures cannot be used in a slicer, with A slicer filters by the values of a column. Add a column instead. This is a plain measure: a field parameter sits on a slicer and switches the fields of the visuals bound to it.
Field parameters cannot go in a slicer group, with Use a slicer on its own to switch fields. A slicer group takes columns only; use a single slicer for a field parameter.
This filter is bound to one column, with Delete it from the Filters panel, then drag a new column there to filter on something else. A filter in the Filters panel keeps its column.
No free field well for "<field>" on this visual means every well that takes that kind of field is full; remove a field from one of the wells, then drag the field again.
Use a visual's menu and tools
While you edit, hover a visual and its bar appears; the controls stay visible while the visual is expanded. The menu carries the actions that apply to that visual:
Edit chart opens the visual in the panel for editing.
Edit interactions sets how a selection in this visual reaches the others, one visual at a time. While the editor is open the usual controls step aside; finish with Done. See Filters, slicers and interactions.
Copy copies the visual to the editor's clipboard; with several selected it reads Copy {n} visuals. Duplicate adds a copy on this page.
Bring to front, Bring forward, Send backward and Send to back restack the visual among the page's tiles. Their shortcuts read Ctrl+Shift+], Ctrl+], Ctrl+[ and Ctrl+Shift+[. A command is disabled when the visual cannot move that way.
Lock keeps the visual in place: a locked visual is skipped when you move or reorder a selection. Unlock it from the Layers panel to move it again. See The report canvas and pages.
Hide stops drawing the visual without removing it from the report, and Show brings a hidden one back; bookmarks use this to switch views. See Show and hide visuals.
On a slicer the page item reads Sync across pages or Stop syncing across pages; a Slicer group reads Filter all pages or Filter this page only instead. Promote to Filters panel moves a page slicer into the report-wide panel, and Demote to page level brings a panel filter back onto one page.
Hide search or Show search adds or removes the search box where the visual supports one, such as a slicer, table or matrix.
View SQL shows the query behind a visual that reads data.
Delete chart removes the visual; with several visuals selected it reads Delete {n} visuals.
An item appears only when it applies to the visual, so two visuals can offer different menus. The menu also carries the sections a visual has: Sort by (picking the same field again reverses the order), the Export formats, and Applied filters. A Table or Matrix keeps its sort and export in its own grid toolbar instead; see Export reports and data.
Beside the menu are the tools:
Prime fills the canvas with the visual. While it is expanded, the Chart view and Table view controls swap the drawing for a table of its data and back. Prime is not offered on KPI, Cards, Slicer or Slicer group visuals.
Reset slicer, offered on a slicer that is filtering, clears its selection and its search box.
On a Custom visual, Interact lets the visual take clicks. It is offered on the selected tile and on the tile that fills the canvas in Prime, and it needs no extra permission; see Custom visuals and the visual library.
When a visual cannot run, its controls collapse to a single Remove visual action, shown without hovering; with several selected it reads Remove {n} visuals. Other states are on Chart states and rendering rules.
Rename a visual and read its tags
Double-click a visual's title to rename it; the field is labelled Chart title. Enter commits the name, Escape cancels, and clicking away also commits when the text changed.
The title carries tags that say how the visual was made: Custom marks a Custom visual (tooltip Custom visual), and AI marks a visual written with the assistant (tooltip AI-assisted).
A synced slicer shows the Synced across pages marker; a visual under a Top N rule shows a Top N badge, with the full rule on hover.
Renaming sets the tile's title, the same text the Title section on the Visual tab holds; see Format a visual.
Limits caps how much data the visual loads; the rows, defaults and editing rules are on Chart limits.
Effects carries two switches, both on by default and saved with the report:
Highlight tile gives the visual its own surface, a fill with a border and a soft shadow, so it stands apart from the page. With it off, the visual sits directly on the canvas.
Highlight on hover fills the tile while the pointer is over it.
Background sets a fill behind the tile's content. Fill is Default, None or Colour, with a colour swatch and an Opacity value; None draws no fill.
Questions, answered
Why can't I edit a visual while several visuals are selected?
The panel edits one visual at a time. With several selected it shows {n} visuals selected. Select a single visual to edit its fields and formatting. and the type picker stays disabled. Select one visual; its fields and formatting open in the panel.
Why does the panel show the report's settings instead of my visual's?
Nothing is selected on the page. The panel then shows the report's own settings, such as Show logo and Default theme; click a single visual to open its Fields, Visual and General tabs instead. See Themes and presentation.
Why is there no Fields tab on my Filters-panel visual?
A visual that lives in the Filters panel is always a slicer: Filters-panel visuals are always slicers. Its type is fixed, so the Fields tab is not offered and its settings stay on the Visual tab. See Filters, slicers and interactions.
How do I rename a visual?
Double-click its title, type the name and press Enter; Escape cancels. Clicking away also saves the new name, but only when the text changed.
What do the Custom and AI tags on a visual mean?
They say how the visual was made. Custom marks a Custom visual, and AI marks a visual written with the assistant. Hover a tag to read it in full: Custom visual and AI-assisted. To hide the tag on a custom visual, turn off Show visual tag under General > Title; see Custom visuals and the visual library.
Which visuals can I sort or drill?
No sort order is offered for KPI, Cards, Slicer group, Key tree and custom visuals. Bar, Line and Combo can drill when more than one field sits on the axis; the drill controls are explained on Read a report.
Why do some visuals offer different menu items?
The menu lists what the visual can do, and an item is left out when it does not apply: View SQL only on a visual that reads data, the page items only on a slicer, and so on. A Table or Matrix keeps its sort and export in its own grid toolbar, so those do not appear in the menu there.
What do "Highlight tile" and "Highlight on hover" do?
Highlight tile is the visual's own surface: a fill with a border and a soft shadow. Turn it off and the visual sits directly on the canvas. Highlight on hover fills the tile while the pointer is over it. Both are on by default and are saved with the report.
How do I delete a visual?
Open its menu and choose Delete chart; with several visuals selected it reads Delete {n} visuals and removes the selection. A visual that cannot run offers Remove visual instead.
How do I move a visual in front of another?
Use Bring to front, Bring forward, Send backward or Send to back on its menu, or drag its row in the Layers panel. Restacking is covered on The report canvas and pages.
What does Lock do to a visual?
Lock keeps a visual in place; a locked visual is skipped when you move or reorder a selection. Unlock it from the Layers panel to move it again.
How do I give a visual its own background?
On the General tab, open Background and set Fill to Default, None or Colour, with a colour swatch and an Opacity value.
