Report pages
A report is one or more pages, and readers move between them with the tabs under the canvas; each page holds its own visuals, so splitting a report into pages keeps each view focused. Use this page to add, rename, duplicate, hide, reorder and delete pages and to write the title, question and notes readers see; to arrange visuals, see The report canvas and pages, and to build the report, see Build a report.
Switch pages
The page strip sits at the bottom of the canvas, and each tab is one page.
- Click a tab to open that page.
- When a report has more than one page, the Previous page and Next page arrows beside the tabs move between pages.
- When the strip is too narrow to show every tab, All pages opens the full list. The page you are on is marked with a dot.
- Drag the strip sideways to scroll it; a scroll does not select a page.
- Readers see only the pages that are not hidden. While you edit, every page stays in the strip, and a hidden tab is marked (hidden).
You manage pages in edit mode. In view mode the strip only switches pages.
Add a page
- In edit mode, click Add page in the page strip.
- The new page opens next to the page you were on and becomes the current page.
- It starts empty, and the report's global slicers are copied onto it automatically. See Filters, slicers and interactions.
A new page takes the next name in the Page series: Page 2, Page 3 and so on.
Rename a page
- In edit mode, double-click the tab of the page you are on, or right-click any page tab and choose Rename page.
- Type the new name, then press Enter or click away to save it. Escape leaves the name as it was.
- A page name can be up to 40 characters; extra spaces inside it are collapsed to one and the ends are trimmed.
- A name that is empty or only spaces keeps the previous name, and renaming to the same name changes nothing.
Duplicate a page
- Right-click the page tab and choose Duplicate page.
- The copy clones the source page's visuals and keeps the source's hidden state, so a hidden page stays hidden.
The copy gets a name of its own, within the same 40-character limit.
Hide or show a page
- In edit mode, right-click the page tab and choose Hide page. The tab stays in the strip, marked (hidden), and readers no longer see the page.
- To bring it back, choose Show page on the tab.
- You cannot hide the last visible page: the control is disabled when hiding would leave readers with no page.
- If every page ends up hidden, viewers fall back to showing all of them, and the report is flagged with "Every page of the report is hidden; viewers fall back to showing all of them."
- A link to a hidden page opens the nearest page the reader can see: the closest visible page before it, otherwise the next visible one.
Change the page order
- In edit mode, drag a page tab to a new place in the strip. This needs at least two pages.
- The order of the tabs is the report's page order, so readers see the same order.
Delete a page
- Right-click the page tab and choose Delete page. A delete control also appears on a tab when you point at it.
- The Delete page? dialog names the page, counts the visuals that go with it, and warns "This action cannot be undone."
- Confirm with Delete page.
- The page's visuals and its page filters are deleted with it; if it was the current page, another page becomes current.
- Deleting is disabled for the last remaining page and for the last visible one, so a report always keeps at least one page readers can open.
Set the page title and question
In edit mode, the fields above the canvas are Page title and Question this page answers. The question field's prompt reads "What question does this page answer?".
- Click a field and type; press Enter or click away to commit, or Escape to leave it as it was.
- Clear a field to remove it.
- Both appear to readers above the page. The heading line shows the title; without a title it falls back to the page's name.
- A page with no title, question or notes shows no heading area to readers.
- Limits: a title can be up to 120 characters and a question up to 240. Both are trimmed. A stored title over the limit is flagged: "Page p1 title is longer than 120 characters."
Write notes for readers
- Open Documentation in the report header; it is described as Page documentation, or Add page documentation when the page has none yet.
- Write in the panel; the placeholder reads "Document this page - sources, definitions, caveats".
- Close the panel to write the notes back. While there are unsaved changes it hints "Unsaved - closing saves".
- Notes can be up to 20,000 characters.
- They are written back when you close the panel, switch pages or leave edit mode, not on every keystroke.
- Readers open Documentation in the same header to read them; when a page has no notes and you cannot edit the page, the action is not shown.
Questions, answered
Do I need edit access to manage pages?
Yes. Adding, renaming, duplicating, hiding, reordering and deleting pages all happen in edit mode. In view mode the page strip only switches pages.
How long can a page name be?
Up to 40 characters. Extra spaces inside the name are collapsed to one and the ends are trimmed; a name that is empty or only spaces keeps the previous one, and renaming a page to its same name changes nothing.
How long can a page title or question be?
A title can be up to 120 characters and a question up to 240; both are trimmed. A stored title over the limit is flagged: "Page p1 title is longer than 120 characters."
How long can the notes on a page be?
Up to 20,000 characters per page.
When do my changes to a page's title, question or notes save?
The title and question commit when you press Enter or click away, and Escape leaves them as they were. Notes are written back when you close the panel, switch pages or leave edit mode. From there they are part of the report's unsaved changes and save with the report; see Save a report, resolve conflicts and restore versions.
Who can read the notes on a page?
Readers open Documentation in the report header to read the page's notes. When a page has no notes and you cannot edit the page, that action is not shown.
What does a duplicated page contain?
A copy of the source page: its visuals are cloned, and it keeps the source's hidden state, so a hidden page stays hidden. The copy gets a name of its own within the same 40-character limit.
What happens if every page is hidden?
Readers fall back to seeing all of them, and the report is flagged with "Every page of the report is hidden; viewers fall back to showing all of them."
Does deleting a page delete its visuals?
Yes. The page's visuals and its page filters are deleted with it, and the deletion cannot be undone. The Delete page? dialog counts the visuals that will go with the page.
What is a new page called?
The next name in the Page series (for example Page 2 after Page 1). The new page opens next to the page you were on and becomes the current one.
Do readers see my pages in the order I set?
Yes. The order of the tabs is the report's page order, saved with the report, so readers get the same order.
