Filters, slicers and interactions

Filters narrow the data a report shows. This page covers the filters you build in edit mode, slicers and the Filters panel, and how a selection in one visual reaches the others.

Filter a page or one visual

  1. Open the report in edit mode and open Filters in the side panel.
  2. Drag a column from BI tables into Filters on this page to filter every visual on the page, or into Filters on this visual to filter only the selected visual.
  3. Choose a mode and a condition, then set the values.
  4. Click Apply. DataMind confirms with the message Filters applied.

Only BI table columns can be filters. A drop that cannot be used answers with one of these messages:

A visual filter needs exactly one saved visual selected. A filter can offer several values at once, a range or a single value. A new filter starts in Basic mode for a text column and in Advanced mode for a number or date column. The conditions available depend on the mode:

ModeConditions
BasicIs any of, Is
Advanced, textIs, Is not, Is any of, Is blank, Is not blank
Advanced, number or dateIs, Is not, Is greater than, Is greater than or equal to, Is less than, Is less than or equal to, Is between, Is blank, Is not blank

The condition is written in words on the filter card: Is any of, Is, Is not, Is greater than, Is greater than or equal to, Is less than, Is less than or equal to, Is between, Is blank, Is not blank. A blank value shows as (blank), a list names its first four values and adds +N more, and a range that covers a single whole day shows as one day, for example Is 2026-09-29.

Values are staged while you edit them and one Apply commits them. Removing a filter commits at once. A filter loads the values of its column on demand, and a filter that exists only in an unsaved draft or a version preview loads them the same way.

Where a filter lives

A field can be filtered from one place only: the Filters section in the side panel, or the filter canvas behind the footer Filters button. When you add a field that already lives in the other place, DataMind asks before moving it:

The move removes the old filter and creates the new one together, so both parts undo at once. Moving a field into the panel leaves one report-wide selection in place of the page-level ones.

Use the Filters panel

The footer Filters button opens the filter canvas. It holds the slicers that apply to every page, and its count badge shows how many slicers are filtering. When the report has no slicers, the button is disabled with the tooltip No filters available, and before a report is open it reads Add a chart first.

Add a slicer

A slicer lists the values of one column, and readers pick values that update the other visuals.

  1. In edit mode, pick Slicer in the Visualizations panel.
  2. Drag a column from BI tables into the slicer's Field well.
  3. On the Visual tab, set the options the slicer needs, such as its Style. See Format a visual for the settings themselves.

You can also drag a column straight onto the footer filter canvas. The column becomes a slicer on the panel, which applies to every page; only slicers belong on the filter canvas. Drop refusals on the canvas read Open a report before adding slicers., Only BI table columns can be added as slicers. and That field is already a slicer on the filter canvas.

Styles: List, Tile and Dropdown. Changing the style trims the field well to what the style can show, and a date style on a column that is not a date falls back to a list. A date slicer replaces the value options with Between, Before, After and Single. Show search and Hide search are offered only for styles that support search, never for a date slicer; a search term is never saved and clears when the slicer resets.

In a report that compares two scopes, a slicer also carries a comparison scope (Both, the first side or the second side) and a Scope label. Changing the side moves the slicer's own selection, with the hint Pick a side to make this slicer filter only First or only Second.

A slicer loads its values in pages. Values per load under General > Limits sets how many values load at a time: 1,000 by default, up to 10,000. Search runs on the server after you pause typing, and the values are ordered by how often they appear, most frequent first.

A list slicer can hold several fields as a hierarchy and loads each level as you expand it.

A Slicer group holds several columns in one tile, each shown as a dropdown. Picking a value in one narrows the other members' lists. If a column you add will share a global slicer's selection instead of filtering on its own, DataMind says so: {label} syncs with the global {label} slicer. A date column cannot join a group: Date fields cannot go in a slicer group, with the advice Use a date slicer on its own for a date range.

A measure cannot be a slicer: Measures cannot be used in a slicer, with A slicer filters by the values of a column. Add a column instead.

Sync a slicer across pages

A slicer sits on one page until you sync it. Open its menu and choose Sync across pages: a copy appears on every page and the banner Synced across pages shows on the slicer. To return it to one page, choose Stop syncing across pages and confirm. The question reads Stop syncing this slicer across pages? Copies on other pages will be deleted.

The Filters panel holds report-wide slicers:

A slicer with no field cannot be synced: Bind a field to the slicer before syncing across pages.

Selections: a slicer starts from the selection saved with the report. A selection you change in edit mode becomes part of the report and is saved with it, so it comes back the next time the report opens. A reader's own picks apply for that session only.

Rank with Top N

Top N shows only the top or bottom items of a visual.

  1. Select one visual in edit mode and open Filters in the side panel.
  2. Under Rank by, choose the field to rank. Under Order by, add fields and set each to Highest first or Lowest first.
  3. Under Show, choose 5, 10 or 20, or Custom and a number.
  4. Clear removes the rule. A Top N badge shows on the tile while it is active.

The largest value is 1,000. For a pie or donut it is 500, and for a funnel it is 250. Top N is not offered for KPI visuals, slicers or visuals in the Filters panel.

Filter a table or matrix

A table or matrix can carry its own filters, and they do not leave the tile. Open a field's filter menu on the tile to set them.

Conditions combine with and, and there is no or between them. The tile shows what it carries as chips: a range reads {value} - {value}, two limits on one field read {op} {value} and {op} {value}, a single condition reads {op} {value}, and a picked set reads one value or {n} values. The tile remembers your choices in this browser, and counts them under Applied filters.

Control how visuals filter each other

By default, clicking a mark on one visual filters every other visual on the page. Ctrl+click (or Cmd+click) adds values to the selection, clicking the only selected value again clears it, and a click on empty canvas clears mark selections while keeping the slicer picks. While drill mode is on, a click drills down instead of filtering.

  1. Open the source visual's menu and choose Edit interactions.
  2. On each other visual, choose Filter this visual to let the selection narrow it, or Don't affect this visual to ignore it.
  3. To set every visual at once, click Filter all or None all.
  4. Click Done. The editor counts what is affected with a status such as {affected} of {targets} affected, or reads No other visuals on this page when there is nothing to set.
OptionWhat it does
Filter this visualThe selection narrows the visual's rows. This is the default.
Highlight this visualOffered for a custom visual set to highlight. The visual keeps all its rows and marks the matching ones.
Don't affect this visualThe selection does not reach the visual.

Tables, matrices and KPI visuals cannot filter other visuals: selecting one as the source shows This visual type can't filter other visuals. A tile marked Selected visual is the source whose selection you are setting, and a tile marked Not affected does not receive it. A tile that nothing filters shows Nothing outside this visual is filtering it.

A visual can also be set to ignore cross-filters: from every other visual, or from all but the sources you name. Allowing one source back while the visual ignores all turns the setting into a list of the other sources.

For a custom visual, the Interactions section of the Visual tab sets Acts as to Visual or Slicer. A visual in the Visual role can also set Selection from other tiles to Filter or Highlight. See Custom visuals.

Slicer selections follow their scope: a page slicer filters only its own page, while a panel slicer and a synced slicer filter every page. When you leave a page, its slicers stop applying without discarding what you picked.

What readers can do

Readers use the filters an editor built. They do not need edit access for this.

If a report has no slicers, the Filters button is disabled with the tooltip No filters available.

Adding, changing and removing filters, slicers and interactions needs edit access to the report. See Share a report and Who can do what in DataPrism.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between the Filters section and the footer Filters panel?

The Filters section in the side panel is where you build filters in edit mode: a page filter in Filters on this page, or a visual filter in Filters on this visual. The footer Filters opens the filter canvas, which holds slicers that apply to every page. A field can be filtered from one place only; DataMind asks before moving it between the two.

Can I filter by a measure, such as sales over 1,000?

No. Filters and slicers work on columns only. To show the highest or lowest items by a measure, use Top N ranked by that measure. See Measures.

How do I make one slicer apply to every page?

Open the slicer's menu and choose Sync across pages. To move it into the Filters panel instead, choose Promote to Filters panel.

Why does a visual ignore my slicer?

Its interaction is probably set to Don't affect this visual. Open Edit interactions on the visual whose selection you want to use, and set the other one to Filter this visual. A tile marked Not affected is not filtered by the selection.

Can a slicer hold a date range?

Yes. On a date slicer, the value options are replaced by Between, Before, After and Single. To filter by a date range, use a date slicer of its own: a date column cannot go into a slicer group.

When I click a bar, does it change the report for everyone?

No. Clicking a mark filters the other visuals for you, and nothing is saved. Clicking the only selected value again clears it, a click on empty canvas clears your mark selections, and a page switch clears them too. Slicer picks stay until they are reset.

How do I get back the report's saved selections?

Choose Reset to default in the report footer. It clears your own view changes, including sort, page size, drill, funnel filters and column widths, and restores the selections the report was saved with.

What is the difference between filter and highlight?

Filter narrows a visual's rows to the selection. Highlight keeps every row and marks the matching ones. Highlight is available only for custom visuals set to highlight.

Can readers add their own filters?

No. Readers use the slicers and the Filters panel an editor built, and can clear their own selections. Adding or changing filters needs edit access.
