Present and wall displays

Present fills the screen with a report for reading, or starts a wall display that refreshes its charts and turns its pages on its own. Use it in a meeting, or on a screen that runs unattended.

Start presenting

  1. Open the report in view mode. Present is not offered in edit mode, so leave edit mode first.
  2. Click Present in the report header. The Present mode panel opens.
  3. Choose how the session runs:
    • Just present fills the screen, and you turn the pages yourself.
    • Set Refresh data and Cycle pages to your liking, then click Start wall display for a screen that runs by itself.
  4. Leave at any time with Esc; the panel itself notes Press Esc to leave.

While a session runs, the report header puts Present away: the session's own control bar takes over.

If the browser does not allow full screen, the report fills the browser window instead, and every control still works. Click Fill the whole screen in the control bar to try full screen again.

For the report's default theme and logo, see Themes and the report logo.

Set up a wall display

A wall display runs on two timers. They are independent: one answers how fresh the numbers must be, the other how long a reader needs on each page.

SettingWhat it doesDefaultRange
Refresh dataRe-runs every chart on the page at the interval you set.On, every 60 seconds5 to 300 seconds, in 5 second steps
Cycle pagesTurns to the next page at the interval you set. Its hint reads Time on each page. On, every 30 seconds5 to 300 seconds, in 5 second steps

Each timer has a switch and a slider. Moving a slider switches that timer on; a timer that is off reads Off.

For a report with one page, Cycle pages is greyed out: its hint changes to This report has one page, and there is nothing to turn between. Add a second page to the report to let it rotate; see Build a report.

Your choices are remembered in this browser and used the next time you start a wall display, on any report.

Control a running session

The session's control bar sits at the bottom of the screen. It dims after a few seconds without pointer or key activity and comes back when you move the pointer or press a key. The controls stay reachable from the keyboard while it is dimmed.

ControlWhat it doesKey

Fit to widthFits the page width to the screen.W

The keys work while a session runs: Space or k pauses and resumes a wall display, the arrow keys turn the pages, and Esc leaves. The zoom keys are + and = to zoom in, - to zoom out, 0 to fit the page and W to fit the width; they ignore a held Ctrl, Alt or Cmd, so the browser's own zoom shortcuts keep working. A key is ignored while you are typing in a field and while a dialog or menu is open.

The bar also shows what the session is doing:

In a Just present session the bar drops the pause control and the status readout, because no timers are running; the zoom and exit controls stay, and so do the page controls on a report with more than one page. The zoom controls stay off the bar on a narrow screen.

Run a wall display from a link

Point a screen at a link and let it start by itself.

  1. Add ?idle=1 to the end of a report link. A session starts when the page opens.
  2. Add refresh and dwell to set the cadences in seconds. For example, ?idle=1&refresh=60&dwell=30 refreshes the charts every 60 seconds and turns the page every 30 seconds.
  3. A value of 0 switches that half off, so ?idle=1&refresh=0 turns the pages without refreshing the charts. idle=0 or idle=false does not start a session at all.
  4. Press Fill the whole screen on the screen itself to use the whole display.

A cadence you leave out keeps the value saved in this browser.

Note

A session that starts from a link opens in the browser window, not full screen: a browser only enters full screen after a click, and nobody is there to click.

Public links open the same read-only surface. Create them on Share a report, and see Embed a report for running a public link unattended on a screen.

While a session runs

Questions, answered

What is the difference between Just present and a wall display?

Just present fills the screen, and you turn the pages yourself. A wall display also refreshes the charts and turns the pages on the timers you set. Leave either one with Esc.

Which keys work while a session is running?

Space or k pauses and resumes a wall display; the Left and Right arrows turn the pages, and Esc leaves. + and = zoom in, - zooms out, 0 fits the page and W fits the width. Keys are ignored while you are typing in a field and while a dialog or menu is open.

What does the control bar show during a wall display?

A countdown to the next refresh or page turn. It reads Paused while the timers are held, and Idle when there is nothing to count down to. No data yet appears until the first numbers load; after that, Updated shows the 24-hour clock time the numbers last loaded.

Why does a wall display refresh less often than the interval I set?

If a refresh is still running when the next one comes due, that refresh is skipped, so a short interval runs as fast as the data allows. A heavy page never piles up refreshes.

Are my wall display timings remembered the next time?

Yes. The two timers are saved in this browser and used again the next time you start a wall display, on any report.

Why did the session end when I clicked Edit?

A session runs in view mode only. Entering edit mode ends it, and opening another report ends it too. Start presenting again from view mode.

Can a report link open straight into a wall display?

Yes. Add ?idle=1 to the link and a session starts when the page opens; refresh and dwell in the link set the cadences, and idle=0 keeps it off. A session started from a link opens in the browser window; press Fill the whole screen on the screen itself. For public links, see Embed a report.

What happens to the timers when the window is in the background?

While the tab is hidden the timers stop, and when it becomes visible again a change that came due runs once. A visible window that is not in focus, for example on a second screen, keeps running.

Does the screen go to sleep during a wall display?

No. While a session runs, DataMind asks the browser to keep the screen awake, so a display left on a screen does not fall asleep. If the browser does not allow it, the session carries on and the screen may sleep as usual.

Why did the control bar go dim?

It dims on purpose after a few seconds without pointer or key activity, and comes back the moment you move the pointer or press a key. The controls stay reachable from the keyboard while it is dimmed.
