Update

The Update section appears in Admin on a self-managed DataMind OS installation. It updates the Installer and DataMind OS, shows the state of every service, and keeps the output of recent restarts, stops and updates. The container logs of the installation are read in Observability; see Platform container logs.

Update was called Platform before. An old /admin/platform link opens Update, and an old /admin/platform?tab=logs link opens Observability > Logs > Platform.

Open the Update page

  1. In the sidebar, click Admin.
  2. In the tab row, click Update. The header reads Update, with the line "Updates and services of this DataMind OS installation". The address is /admin/update.

What the page shows

On the left sits the services sidebar:

On the right, three tabs:

TabWhat it holds
UpdatesThe Installer and DataMind OS updates, in two steps, and every image with its installed and available build. This tab opens first. See Update DataMind OS.
MapThe service groups drawn as a circuit. Click a group to find it in the sidebar.
Job logsRestarts, stops and updates, kept for an hour after they end. See Services and job logs.

The tab you pick last opens next time; it is remembered in this browser. The Updates and Job logs buttons in the sidebar header open the same tabs.

Note

The Update page is not available on phones. A phone opens Minds instead.

Who can open the Update page

The Update entry appears when one of your roles grants View Platform Services or Check For Platform Updates. Container log permissions do not open it; they open Observability > Logs > Platform.

PermissionWhat it lets you do
View Platform ServicesSee the services sidebar, Map and Job logs.
Check For Platform UpdatesSee the Updates tab, the Updates button and the installed build.
Execute Platform UpdateStart an Installer update, a DataMind OS update and Pull images only.
Restart Platform ServicesRestart a service.
Stop Platform ServicesStop a service.

With Check For Platform Updates alone, the page shows only the updates. With View Platform Services alone, the tabs are Map and Job logs, and Map opens first. Without Execute Platform Update, the update buttons stay greyed out and the page reads "You can see the updates; starting one needs the permission to run updates."

Platform Administrator holds all of these permissions. Platform Viewer is read-only: service state, application logs and update availability, without stopping services, running updates or reading data-tier logs. Assign permissions on a role, as described in Roles and permissions; the full list is in the permission reference.

On a managed installation

If DataMind manages your installation, the page shows DataMind OS with the version this installation runs, and the line Services and updates are managed by DataMind. There is nothing to update or restart here. The container logs are still in Observability > Logs > Platform.

If your installation does not include the platform controls at all, the Update entry does not appear.

When the page cannot load

The page depends on the platform's control plane. While it loads, the page draws its outline; when the control plane cannot answer, a note takes the data's place and offers Retry.

You seeWhat it means
No control plane behind the gatewayThe control plane is not running here or was not deployed with this installation.
Control plane can't reach its backendThe control plane is running, but the part of it behind this view is not answering.
Control plane not reachableThe control plane did not answer at all.

Click Retry once the problem is fixed. If it keeps failing, ask your administrator to check the installation. The messages and fixes are listed in Administration troubleshooting.

Questions, answered

I do not see the Update tab. Why?

Either your installation does not include the platform controls, or none of your roles grants View Platform Services or Check For Platform Updates. Ask an administrator to check your role. On a phone, the tab is not available at all.

Where did Admin > Platform go?

It is now Admin > Update, at /admin/update. Bookmarks and links to /admin/platform open Update on their own, and a link to the old Logs tab opens Observability > Logs > Platform.

Where are the container logs now?

In Observability > Logs > Platform. A service's logs button in the sidebar, and Open logs in its details, open that view filtered to the service's container. See Platform container logs.

Why does the page say services and updates are managed by DataMind?

DataMind runs the services and updates for this installation, so the page shows only the version it runs. You do not need to do anything here.

Why do I see Map and Job logs but no Updates tab?

Your role grants View Platform Services without Check For Platform Updates. The Updates tab, the Updates button and the installed build appear with that permission.

Why can't the Update page load?

The page needs the platform's control plane to answer. If it cannot, the page keeps its outline and shows No control plane behind the gateway, Control plane can't reach its backend or Control plane not reachable, with a Retry button. Retry after the problem is fixed; if it keeps failing, ask your administrator to check the installation.

Where do I see which version my installation runs?

In Admin > Update. The sidebar header shows the installed DataMind OS build under DataMind OS, and the Updates tab shows the installed and latest build of the Installer and of DataMind OS. On an installation DataMind manages for you, the notice shows DataMind OS with the version.

Why are service controls and updates unavailable?

While the Installer replaces itself, service controls and DataMind OS updates pause, and a notice explains this; everything returns when the Installer is back, usually in under five minutes. While any maintenance job runs, restart, stop and update actions wait for it to finish.
