Images reach a chat in several ways: under messages, on the steps of a turn, from tool results, and in shared chats. Wherever one appears, clicking it opens the original in a full-size view. This page covers that view and the states around it. To add files and images to a message, see Attach files and images to a message.
Where images appear
Under a message. Your images and Oda's appear in a gallery under the message itself.
From a tool result. When a tool returns a picture, the call's card shows it like a message image, and it opens the same way.
In the Trajectory. An image in a record shows as a small thumbnail in its attachment list; Trajectory and session logs covers the view.
In a shared chat on the web. A shared copy shows its images with the same viewer; A shared chat on the web covers everything around it.
Open an image full size
Click a loaded picture: a thumbnail under a message, in a step, on a tool call, or in a shared chat.
The original opens over the chat, as large as fits: up to 1600 pixels wide and within the window's height.
Close it with Escape, by clicking outside the picture, or with the close control in the corner. Clicking the picture itself does not close the view.
The tooltip on a picture reads View original. When you close the view, focus returns to the picture you opened.
Note
For an image viewer with zoom and fit width, open the file in the side panel's preview: Preview images and HTML.
What the small sizes mean
A single image under a message shows at up to 240 pixels on its long edge and keeps its shape. It is never enlarged past its real size.
When several images sit together, they share one gallery and show as square tiles. A tile crops the picture to fit: a very tall image keeps its top, and a very wide one keeps its left edge.
A failed image keeps its place in the gallery, so the other images do not move.
Whatever the size in the chat, opening a picture shows the original.
While an image loads, and when it fails
While the picture is being fetched, the image shows a loading state labelled Loading image…. Clicking it does nothing until the picture is ready.
When an image cannot be loaded, it becomes a retry control labelled Image failed to load; click to retry. Clicking it runs the same load again, and the picture appears in place when it succeeds.
Images in the message you are writing
An image you added to a message previews in the row above the message box. Point at it: the tooltip reads View original, and clicking opens the same full-size view. If you remove the image from the message while its view is open, the view closes with it. The row itself is described in Attach files and images to a message.
Questions, answered
How do I open an image full size?
Click the picture: a loaded image under a message, on a step, on a tool call, or in a shared chat opens the original over the chat.
How do I close the full-size view?
Press Escape, click outside the picture, or use the close control in the corner. Clicking the picture itself does not close it.
Why can't I open an image while it is still loading?
The picture is not ready yet, so clicks are ignored while it loads. Wait for the picture to appear, then click it.
What can I do when an image fails to load?
Click it. The image shows Image failed to load; click to retry, and clicking runs the load again; the picture replaces the control when it arrives.
Why are very tall or very wide images cropped?
A thumbnail keeps a tidy size, so an extreme shape is cropped: a very tall image keeps its top, and a very wide one keeps its left edge. Open the image to see all of it.
Why are several images shown as small squares?
When a message carries several images, they share one gallery and show as square tiles. Click a tile to open the full picture.
Why did the full-size view close by itself?
If you opened the image from the message you are writing and then removed it from the message, its view closes too. Add the image again to preview it.
Do images in a shared chat open the same way?
Yes. A shared chat shows its images with the same viewer, so clicking one opens the same full-size view; see A shared chat on the web.
