The shared browser in the side panel

The side panel of a chat holds a Browser tab that you and Oda share. Oda can open pages there, read them and work on them, while you watch in the same panel, take over whenever you like, and point Oda at what matters.

Open the browser

  1. Open the side panel beside your chat and choose Browser on the panel's Start page. A browser tab opens.
  2. Type an HTTP or HTTPS address in the Enter an HTTP(S) address field and click Go. An address without a scheme gets https:// first, and pages served from your own computer, such as localhost, work too.
  3. Move around with Back, Forward and Reload, and open the current page outside Oda with Open in system browser.

Links to pages in a chat open a browser tab in the panel by default; under Settings > General, Open chat links in can send them to a new browser tab instead. For the panel around the browser, see The side panel.

Work in a page with Oda

While Oda drives a page, the panel shows Oda is using the browser with a Stop control, and an overlay with Oda's cursor covers the page.

  1. Choose Stop to take the page yourself; typing in the page pauses Oda the same way. The panel then shows You have control, and Oda waits instead of acting.
  2. Choose Hand back when you are done, and Oda reads the page again before it continues.

Oda opens and uses browser tabs only in the chat on your screen.

Approve a site for Oda

The first time Oda reads or acts on a site in a chat, a Browser dialog asks Allow Oda to read and act on <site>? with the note:

Oda will see the content of <site> pages in this chat's browser and can click and type there. It never types passwords or payment details.

Your options:

Local addresses such as localhost never need a question, and a chat in Full access skips it; see Workspaces, files and permissions for the access modes.

Your company's browser rules are checked before this question and win over any answer you give. If the rules block a site, the tab shows This site is blocked by your organization’s browser rules. and Oda does not retry it. Some companies allow Oda only on listed sites, and if the rules cannot be read at the moment, browser actions are unavailable until they can be read again. Your administrator sets these rules; see Manage DataMind Oda for your company.

Pick elements for Oda

  1. Click the pick button in the browser's toolbar, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  2. Click the parts of the page you want Oda to see, for example a table; each pick lands in the message box.

While picking is on, hold Alt to use the page itself, hold Shift to keep picking, and press Esc to stop. Picking sends only what you clicked and does not approve the site for Oda; Picking page elements covers what each pick sends.

Questions, answered

Can I have more than one browser tab open at once?

Yes. Browser tabs are independent: open another from the panel's Start page, and each tab keeps its own page and address. A tab shows the page's own title once it loads.

What happens to my tabs when I restart Oda?

A browser tab that had a page open keeps its address on this computer. After a restart the tab shows Previously opened with the page's saved title and address and waits; choose Restore page and it opens. Closing a tab forgets only its own saved page; the other tabs keep theirs. A restored page opens fresh: what the browser saved for a site, such as sign-ins and cookies, is kept only for the run, so a page that needs a sign-in asks again after a restart.

Can I open the page in my usual browser?

Yes. Open in system browser in the browser's toolbar opens the current page in the browser you normally use.

Why will Oda not open a tab in this chat?

Oda opens and uses browser tabs only in the chat on your screen. If you switched to another chat, or the chat is hidden, bring this chat to the screen and let Oda try again.

How do I take a page back from Oda?

Choose Stop while the panel shows Oda is using the browser. The page is yours: the panel shows You have control, and Oda waits instead of acting. Choose Hand back to give the page back, and Oda reads it again before it continues.

Will Oda ask me about the same site again?

Oda asks once per site in a chat. Allow in this chat lasts until the chat ends or Oda restarts, and Always allow <site> is remembered for every chat in this workspace. Deny lasts for the chat, and Oda does not ask again for that site in that chat.

What happens when my company limits the browser?

Your company's rules are checked first and win over any answer you give. The rules can turn browser actions off for Oda, block a site (a rule for a site also covers its subdomains), or allow Oda only on listed sites; a blocked page shows that your organization's browser rules blocked it, and Oda does not retry. If the rules cannot be read at the moment, browser actions are unavailable until they can be read again. Ask your administrator if Oda needs a site at work; you can open it in your usual browser meanwhile.

Why do some pages not work in the side panel?

Pages here run sandboxed: they cannot ask for permissions such as the camera or microphone, and downloads are cancelled. A link that asks for a new window opens as a new browser tab. Some sites refuse to load inside the panel at all. When a page needs downloads or permissions, use Open in system browser and work there.
