Add and manage destinations

A destination is an external system that Writeback sends data to. Add one here before you import its tables, and come back to this page when you need to edit, duplicate, sync or delete it.

Which destinations you can add

The picker offers only the types Writeback can write to. Other source types are not offered as destinations, and a card marked Soon cannot be picked.

Add a destination

  1. Open the picker: click Add destination in the header, New in the tree toolbar, or press Alt+N. On the Dashboard, Add data source at the foot of a card starts the same flow with that card's type preselected. A link that ends with ?openAddDestination=true opens it too.
  2. Find the type. Type in Search sources..., or browse the left list: All Sources, Popular or a category group. Hover over a card to preview it; the panel reads Hover a source until you point at one.
  3. Click the card. The form opens with that type already chosen.
  4. On General, enter Name and Code. As you type the name, DataMind OS fills in Code for you, and you can change it.
  5. In Connection, enter Host, Port, Username and Password. Enter Database if the form shows it. Turn on SSL/TLS Connection if the server requires an encrypted connection.
  6. Click Test Connection and wait for Connection test successful. If the test fails, the link reads Connection failed; hover over it to read the error the destination returned.
  7. Click Add. The destination joins the tree and opens in a tab, and its table picker opens beside the tree, unless the type has nothing to import. DataMind OS also creates a workflow named after the destination, with (Standard) added, for example Sales DB (Standard).

For Google BigQuery, the Service account section holds the Project ID and Service account email fields. See Connect a database for the service account details.

When the destination is added, continue with Import destination tables.

Edit a destination

  1. Right-click the destination and choose Edit, or select it and press Enter. Clicking its row on the Dashboard opens the same form in a tab.
  2. Change the fields you need. Name and Code are locked while you edit.
  3. Click Save. The button stays off until you change a field.

DataMind OS shows Connection updated successfully. If the server rejects the change, the error appears on the form.

Duplicate a destination

  1. Right-click the destination and choose Duplicate, or press Alt+C. The item appears only for destinations that can be duplicated.
  2. The form opens with the connection details filled in, and Name and Code empty. Enter a new Name and Code, and change anything else you need.
  3. Click Duplicate. DataMind OS shows Connection duplicated successfully, and the copy appears in the tree.

Sync the schema of a destination

  1. Right-click the destination and choose Sync Schema, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
  2. DataMind OS shows Synchronization started. The destination shows Processing until the check finishes, and the menu item reads Synchronizing… while it runs.

Sync Schema looks for new columns on the tables already in Writeback, and adds them. It does not detect new tables. To bring in a new table, right-click the destination, choose View Destination and import the table on Import destination tables.

Delete a destination

Warning

Deleting a destination removes it, and everything under it, from Writeback. The dialog states that the action cannot be undone.

  1. Right-click the destination and choose Delete, or press Ctrl+Backspace.
  2. The dialog first checks what depends on the tables under the destination.
  3. Click Delete. If something depends on them, the dialog lists it and the button reads Delete anyway.

Limits and edge cases

Questions, answered

Can I use the same database as a Lake source and as a Writeback destination?

Yes. Add it again under Writeback. A destination is its own connection, with its own Name and Code.

Why is the Database field missing for Clickhouse?

The Clickhouse connection does not take a database, so its form leaves the field out. The other database types show it.

Test Connection fails. What should I check?

Hover over Connection failed to read the error details that the destination returned. Then check Host, Port, Username and Password, and whether the server requires SSL/TLS Connection. Also check that the server accepts connections from DataMind OS. For other messages, see Writeback troubleshooting.

Can I rename a destination?

No. Name and Code are locked when you edit a destination. Duplicate it with a new name instead, then delete the old one if you no longer need it.

How do I create a second connection to the same server with different credentials?

Right-click the destination and choose Duplicate. Enter a new Name and Code, change the credentials, and click Duplicate.

I added columns to a table in my database. How do they reach Writeback?

Right-click the destination and choose Sync Schema. It adds the new columns to the tables already in Writeback.

I created a new table in my database. Why doesn't Sync Schema show it?

Sync Schema does not detect new tables. Right-click the destination, choose View Destination and import the table. See Import destination tables.

What happens to my Writeback tables if I delete the destination?

The destination and everything under it, including its Writeback tables, are removed from Writeback after you confirm. The dialog first lists anything that depends on those tables, and the button reads Delete anyway when there is something.

Why is the Add button disabled?

Add turns on once you change a field in the form. If a field shows a red message, fix that field first.

Why can't I choose a source type marked Soon?

A card marked Soon cannot be picked. Choose a type without the badge.

Why is there no connection form for the type I picked?

Not every source type has a destination form. The panel reads No data available and This data source type does not have a connection form available.. Close it and choose another type.
