System Trace and the run timeline

The panel header shows a timeline of recent runs as a small chart. System Trace opens the same picture larger, with a short guide to reading it. Use both to see how runs have been going and where failures cluster.

Read the run timeline

The timeline plots the runs in view from oldest to newest, with the newest run on the right. It shows up to the last 50 runs.

The arrow at the end of the line hides whenever the chart updates and returns after about 1.3 seconds.

If the timeline cannot load, you see Failed to load job timeline. Reload the page to try again.

Read the chart's positions

From top to bottom, the chart has five positions: Finished, Running, Aborted, Run Error and Failed.

Run Error is the chart's label for a run that the runs table shows as Running Error: a step failed while the run's other steps still work. If a step is left failing, the run ends as Failed. To find the failing step, see Monitor and fix a run.

Open the larger chart

  1. Click System Trace in the panel header, next to the timeline.
  2. The dialog opens with a larger chart. Its title says how many runs it shows, for example Job Status History: Last 12 Runs.

In the dialog, the dots are for reading only: hover one to see the workflow name and its status. To open a workflow, click its dot on the timeline in the header instead.

The dialog explains how to read the chart: each point is a single run; runs that completed successfully sit at the top, while failures and errors sit towards the bottom; a cluster of low points may point to a recurring issue with a workflow or its data; and aborted runs typically mean the job was manually stopped or pre-empted by a system event. It also notes: "Up to the last 50 runs are shown."

Questions, answered

Why is a failed run missing from the chart?

The chart plots the runs in view, up to the 50 newest. Check that the right workflow or type is selected, and that the run is not older than the last 50. Runs without a start date, or with a status the chart does not plot, are left out too. The run itself is still in the runs table.

What does Run Error mean in the chart?

Run Error is the chart's label for a run with the Running Error status: a step failed while the run's other steps still work. If a step is left failing, the run ends as Failed. See Job runs for all run statuses.

Why does the timeline show only the last 50 runs?

The chart is a quick recent picture of your runs. It plots up to the 50 newest runs and says so in the dialog: "Up to the last 50 runs are shown." Older runs are not gone; find them in the runs table with its date filters.

How do I read the chart's vertical position?

From top to bottom, the five positions are Finished, Running, Aborted, Run Error and Failed. The higher a run sits, the healthier it is. Runs near the top completed successfully, and a cluster of low points may point to a recurring issue.

Why do some runs have no dot?

Only runs that did not finish cleanly are marked with a dot. A Finished run is a point on the line without a dot, so it cannot be hovered or opened from the chart.

Can I click a point in the System Trace dialog?

No. In the dialog the points are for reading only, and hovering one shows the workflow name and its status. On the timeline in the panel header, clicking a dot opens that workflow's tab.

Does the chart update while a run is going?

Yes. The timeline refreshes by itself while runs progress, so you do not need to reload the screen.

Why is the timeline not shown?

The timeline appears only when it has runs to plot. It is hidden when no run is in view, for example before the first run or when the selected workflow or type has no runs yet.

Does System Trace need a different permission?

No. It is read-only and shows the same runs as the runs table. You need a View permission for the workflow types you want to see, such as View Lake Workflow Objects. See Workflow permissions.
