View dependencies

The Dependencies step records the Warehouse and Lake tables your view reads from, so the view carries the right upstream context. It sits between Columns and RLS in the view editor, and there is nothing to validate on it. For the full build flow, see Views.

Choose the tables

  1. Open the view editor and go to Dependencies: use Next from Columns, or Previous from RLS.
  2. While nothing is marked, the step reads No dependencies selected and Choose tables your view depends on to give it the right upstream context. Click Manage Dependencies. Once the list has tables, the button reads Manage.
  3. In the Manage Dependencies window, tick the tables the view depends on.
    • The Select dependencies panel lists Warehouse tables and Lake tables in two columns. Only deployed tables are offered, so deploy a table before you point the view at it.
    • Use Search tables... to narrow the list and Selected only to hide everything that is not marked yet. Select all marks every row on screen; while a search is active its label reads Select all shown.
    • A marked Warehouse table shows Choose source systems underneath it. Source systems are optional; the next section covers them.
  4. Click Done to close the window. The marks land on the step straight away. Cancel closes the window the same way and does not undo them.

Pick source systems for a table

Under a marked Warehouse table in the Manage Dependencies window, Choose source systems opens a picker for that table's source systems.

Questions, answered

How do I choose the tables my view depends on?

Open Dependencies, then click Manage Dependencies, or Manage once the list has tables. Tick the tables in the Select dependencies panel, close the window with Done, and save the step with Apply, or with Next and Save & Continue.

How do I remove a table from the list?

Point at its row on the step and click the X (Remove dependency), or unmark it in the Manage Dependencies window. Save the step to store the change. To undo before saving, click Revert.

What are the names in brackets next to a table?

They are the source systems marked for that Warehouse table, picked under its row in the Manage Dependencies window with Choose source systems. A table with no marked source systems shows no brackets.

Do I have to pick a source system?

No. Source systems are optional: a table works as a dependency with none marked. Pick them only when the view should read from particular ones; Clear unmarks what you picked.

What happens if I click Cancel in the modal?

Cancel closes the window; it does not undo your marks, because the step updates as you tick. Done closes the window the same way. To undo, click Revert on the step before saving.

Why can't I find my table in the list?

The picker lists deployed tables only, so deploy a table that is missing. A column with nothing to offer reads No Warehouse tables available or No Lake tables available; a search that matches nothing reads No Warehouse tables match your search or No Lake tables match your search. Also turn off Selected only, which hides the rows that are not marked.

Can I set dependencies before the view is saved?

Yes. The step and its window work at any time, and the list saves with the view like any other step. In practice the view exists by then: it is created when you first save General.

What does "Failed to update view dependencies" mean?

The save did not reach the view and no specific reason came back. Try again. When the server sends a reason, it appears in the toast instead of this message.
