Transformation dependencies
The Dependencies step sits between Query and Mapping in the transformation editor. It records the objects your transformation reads from, so the transformation gets the right upstream context and circular setups are blocked early. The full build, test and finalize flow is on Build, test and finalize a transformation.
Open the Dependencies step
- Reach the step with Next after Query, or jump straight to it when the status banner points here: click Navigate to Dependencies.
- While nothing is marked, the step reads No dependencies selected and Choose tables your transformation depends on to give it the right upstream context. A Manage Dependencies button opens the modal.
- Once objects are marked, the step turns into a dashboard: cards grouped by kind, a count such as 4 dependencies, and a Manage button.
Choose the dependencies
- Click Manage on the step, or Manage Dependencies while it is empty. The Select dependencies modal opens.
- Tick the checkbox on every object you want to mark. The modal lists the objects you can depend on together with your current selection; when the selection changes, only marked rows are kept, so unmarked rows drop off.
- For a Warehouse table, pick its source systems on the row: click Add Source and search the grouped list with Search options.... When nothing matches, the list reads No options found. You can mark a table without picking any source system.
- The badges on a row show its marked source systems. Click the X on a badge to unmark that one system; beyond four badges, the rest collapse into a +N more badge.
- When the marked set is right, close the modal and save the step.
Read the dashboard
- Cards are grouped by kind and sit in a grid that adapts to the width of the window.
- Hover a card to reveal its controls. Click the card or the open control to open the object in its own popup, or press Enter or Space on the open control to do the same; the X removes the dependency from the list.
- Each card shows the source systems marked for it. A dependency with none reads No source system selected; a saved source system that is not in the list reads Unknown source system.
- Removing a dependency changes the list only, nothing else. Revert puts the saved list back before you save.
- The read-only picture a table keeps of its dependencies and dependants is described on Dependencies and dependants.
Save the step
- Apply saves the selection; Next saves it and moves on. Each save replaces the previous list, so what you mark now becomes the transformation's dependency list.
- Success shows Dependencies saved successfully. If the save fails, the message explains why; when nothing comes back, it reads Failed to update Transformation.
- Revert drops your unsaved changes.
- Both Apply and Next run the checks below before the step completes.
- With the list saved, the wizard continues to Mapping, then Validation. Running tests is described on Run and monitor transformation tests.
Fix a refused save
- Your own source system. A row cannot combine the transformation's own table with the transformation's own source system. The save is refused with "A transformation cannot depend on the same table using its own source system. Choose a different source system." Pick a different source system for that row, or unmark it.
- A circular dependency. Before the step completes, the dependency graph is checked. A cycle means two or more transformations depend on each other, directly or through a chain. The check refuses Next and shows the problem found; when no detail comes back, it reads Circular dependency detected. The refusal stays on the step, in the red banner at the top of the popup, where View details shows the full message. Remove the dependency that closes the loop and save again; Revert clears the refusal.
- A cycle that is already recorded. If the transformation lies on a cycle from an earlier change, the status banner explains why this step needs attention, even before you press Next. Fix it here in the same way.
- A check that cannot run. When the check itself fails, the step reads Failed to check dependencies. Please try again. Click Apply or Next again to rerun it.
Questions, answered
How do I add a dependency?
Click Manage on the step (or Manage Dependencies while it is empty), tick the objects in the Select dependencies modal, add source systems on their rows if you need them, and save with Apply or Next. Success shows Dependencies saved successfully.
How do I remove a dependency?
Hover its card and click the X, or unmark it in the Select dependencies modal, then save. The list changes only; nothing else is affected. Revert puts the saved list back.
What does "No source system selected" mean?
You marked this dependency but no source system for it. Source systems are optional on a dependency; if the transformation should read from a particular one, open Manage, click Add Source on the row and pick it. A badge that reads Unknown source system means the saved source system is not in the list any more; pick one again.
Can a transformation depend on its own table?
Yes, but not through the transformation's own source system. Marking the same table with its own source system is refused with "A transformation cannot depend on the same table using its own source system. Choose a different source system." Pick a different source system for that row.
What does "Failed to check dependencies. Please try again." mean?
The circular-dependency check could not run, so the step could not complete. Click Apply or Next again to rerun the check.
How do I look at a dependency without leaving the step?
Hover its card and click the open control, or click the card itself; press Enter or Space on the open control to do the same. The object opens in its own popup, with the transformation editor behind it.
Can I pick more than one source system for a dependency?
Yes. Add as many as the row offers; the first four show as badges and the rest collapse into +N more. Click the X on a badge to unmark a single system, or add systems again from Add Source.
Can I clear the whole list?
Yes. Unmark every row in the Select dependencies modal and save; the step returns to No dependencies selected. This changes the transformation's list only.
