This page is the full key map and gesture reference for the deck editor, plus the rules that keep the keys out of your way. For the everyday summary, see Edit slides and elements; a running show has its own keys, covered in Present.
Press Ctrl, or Cmd on a Mac.
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+Z | Undo the last change. Works while your cursor is in a field. |
| Ctrl+Shift+Z, or Ctrl+Y | Redo. Also works in a field. |
| Ctrl+S | Save the deck now. See Saving and version history. |
| Ctrl+D | Duplicate the selection. |
| Ctrl+A | Select every element on the slide. |
| Ctrl+C | Copy the selection, when no page text is highlighted. |
| Ctrl+V | Paste. A picture on your computer's clipboard inserts as an image element, and it wins over anything copied inside Slides. |
| Ctrl+G / Ctrl+Shift+G | Group or ungroup the selection. |
| Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+U, Ctrl+Shift+X | Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough. |
| Ctrl+] / Ctrl+Shift+] | Bring forward, bring to front. |
| Ctrl+[ / Ctrl+Shift+[ | Send backward, send to back. |
| Arrow keys | Move the selection by 1 px; hold Shift to move it by 10 px. |
| Delete or Backspace | Delete the selection. With nothing selected on the canvas, it acts on the slide focused in the rail. |
| Esc | Clear the selection. |
Focus a slide in the rail, then:
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Alt+Shift+D | Duplicate the slide. |
| Alt+C | Copy the slide. |
| Ctrl+Shift+V | Paste the copied slide below. |
| Alt+L | Open Apply layout. See Slide layouts. |
| F2 | Rename the slide. |
| Delete or Backspace | Delete the focused slide, when nothing on the canvas is selected. |
After a delete, the next slide becomes active and focus returns to the rail. Drag a thumbnail to reorder the slides, and shift-click a transition chip to apply that transition to every junction; see Animations and transitions.
| Gesture | What it does |
|---|---|
| Drag, resize or rotate | One gesture is one undo step; the change is written when you release. |
| Drag with Shift held | Keeps proportions while resizing; while rotating, turns in 15-degree steps. |
| Resize with Alt held | Resizes about the centre. |
| Drag on empty canvas | Draws a selection rectangle; everything it touches is selected, whole groups included. |
| Alt+click | Selects a single element inside a group. |
| Shift+click | Adds an element to the selection, or removes it. |
| Right-click | Selects the element and opens the canvas menu. |
| Double-click | Opens a text element for editing, or a picture for cropping. On empty canvas, it adds a text box. |
| Ctrl+wheel | Zooms around the pointer, between 10% and 400%. |
| Wheel | Pans the canvas. |
| Space+drag | Pans. Space works only while the pointer is over the canvas. |
| Click the title line once, or twice | One click opens the Presentation options popover; a double-click renames the deck. |
A locked element has no hit area at all: clicks, drags and the selection rectangle skip it until you unlock it in the Arrange section.
Ctrl+C copies your slide elements only when the elements are selected and no page text is highlighted. If text is highlighted, the browser's copy takes it. Clear the highlight, select the elements, and copy again.
Select it and press an arrow key to move it by 1 px, or hold Shift with the arrow to move it by 10 px.
In crop mode, press Enter to apply the crop as a single edit, or Esc to cancel it and leave the picture as it was. The session also ends if the element leaves the canvas or you select something else, and a crop you never changed adds no undo step. See Images, video and deck assets.
No. The canvas keys stand down inside dialogs, menus and popovers, so the dialog keeps its own keys: Esc closes the dialog instead of clearing your selection. Undo, redo and save still work while your cursor is in a field such as a Properties input or the notes.
Cut is not a Slides command. Ctrl+X is always left to your browser, so it cuts the text you have highlighted and does nothing to slide elements. To move an element, copy it with Ctrl+C and delete the original, or press Ctrl+D to duplicate it.
No. The editing keys apply on the deck editor's canvas. A running show and its speaker view have their own key map; see Present.
Yes. Copy a picture on your computer and press Ctrl+V with the slide open; it lands as an image element. A picture from your computer wins over anything copied inside Slides. Pasting a picture stands down while a dialog is open or while you are cropping.
Press Ctrl+Shift+Z, or Ctrl+Y. Both work while your cursor is in a field, the same way undo does.
Press Ctrl+A. It selects every element on the open slide, so you can move or restyle them together.
Focus a slide in the rail and press Alt+L to open Apply layout. See Slide layouts for what each layout keeps and drops.
