Present

Present a deck full screen from the editor. Use it when the deck is ready for an audience: you move through the slides, black the screen when you need a pause, and read your notes in the speaker view.

Start a show

  1. Open the deck in the editor and select the slide to start from in the slide thumbnails on the left.
  2. Click Present at the right of the editor's top bar, or press Shift F5 while the deck is open in the editor. The button's tooltip reads Present from this slide.
  3. Wait for the show to open. It asks your browser for full screen. If the browser refuses, the show fills the browser tab instead.

Present starts from the slide you selected. It is disabled when the deck has no slides.

Move through the show

Move with the keyboard, or click or tap the slide. The control bar at the bottom shows the slide number, the time since the show started and the buttons for the same actions.

KeyWhat it doesControl bar button
Right, Down, Page Down, Space, EnterNext slideNext slide
Left, Up, Page Up, BackspacePrevious slidePrevious slide
HomeFirst slideNone
EndLast slideNone
OOpen Jump to a slideAll slides
BBlack the screen, or show the slide againBlack the screen, or Show the slide while the screen is black
MTurn reduce motion on or offReduce motion
EscEnd the showEnd the show

A click or a tap moves forward. On a touch screen, swipe left to go forward and right to go back; the swipe has to be deliberate, so a short drag leaves the show where it is. Clicks on the control bar never move the show. A press on a video, a YouTube still or an audio player counts as playback, not as a step forward.

A click on a black screen does move the show forward, so use B to bring the slide back. Keys pressed with Ctrl, Alt or Cmd are left to the browser.

While Jump to a slide is open, only O and Esc work, and they close it. Click any slide in it to go there. Each slide shows its number and its name, if it has one, and the slide you are on is outlined.

What screen readers hear

Turn motion down

SettingWhat it doesDefault
Reduce motionStops slide transitions, entrance effects and looping motion during the show.Off, unless your system asks for less motion. Press M to change it for this session.

Press M, or click Reduce motion, to stop the motion mid-show: transitions and entrances stop at once and the slide settles, and count-up numbers jump to their final value.

The setting lasts for this session only and resets when you reload the page. If your system asks for less motion, motion stays off either way: the system preference can only ask for less, never for more, so the show cannot turn motion back on. To set up the motion itself, see Animations and transitions.

Use the speaker view

The speaker view opens in a second window, so you can see the next slide and your notes while the audience sees only the slide. It draws the slides with the show's own renderer, so the presenter sees what the audience sees, in the deck's theme.

  1. Click Open speaker view in the control bar. It is the button with the monitor icon.
  2. Drag the new window to the screen you present from.

The speaker view shows:

The speaker view has its own keyboard. Right, Down, Page Down and Space go forward. Left, Up and Page Up go back. Home, End, B, M and Esc work as they do in the show, so Esc ends the show from either window. Every key you press in the speaker view is sent to the show, and the show accepts commands only from this window, so another tab or an embedded widget cannot control your presentation.

Warning

The speaker view needs pop-ups allowed for this site. If your browser blocks it, the show shows The speaker window was blocked by the browser. Allow pop-ups for this site, then try again. Allow pop-ups, then click Open speaker view again. If you see The speaker window could not be prepared. Try opening it again., click Open speaker view again.

To close the speaker view, click Close speaker view, or close its window with its own close button. The show carries on. Ending the show closes the speaker view too.

Live data during a show

A chart, table or text bound to a live query can refresh when the show starts. The refresh mode of each bound element decides when its query runs.

Refresh modeWhen the query runsRuns when the show starts
When presenting startsEach time a show startsYes
When the deck opensOnce, when you open the deck in the editorNo
Only when refreshed by handOnly when you refresh it in the editor. This is the default for a new binding. No

The fresh numbers replace the saved ones for this show only. Nothing is written into the deck.

If a query fails, the show keeps the numbers saved with the deck and shows a notice above the control bar: Live data could not be refreshed. One element is showing the values saved with the deck. When more than one element fails, the notice counts the elements instead. Click Dismiss to hide it.

To set a refresh mode, see Fill slides from your data.

What plays, and where

The same renderer draws every surface, so a slide looks the same everywhere. What changes is playback.

WhereWhat happens
The editing canvasEmpty text elements show their placeholder and media stays frozen; motion is held still so the canvas guides stay true.
Thumbnails and previewsThe slide rail, deck cards and version previews show a still picture of each slide, with no placeholders.
The showThe only place video and audio play; media may start on its own and show its controls. Entrance effects play when a slide arrives, with staggered elements about 90 ms apart.
Print and PDFNo autoplay. Placeholders are left out of the page, and a blurred backdrop is left out of it too.

Video and audio play only in a show, with the playback settings you chose for each element. See Images, video and deck assets and Animations and transitions.

What ends a show

Warning

Leaving full screen ends the show. The editor stays on the slide you ended on.

Questions, answered

How do I start from the first slide?

Select the first slide in the slide thumbnails, then click Present. During a show, press Home to go back to the first slide.

Can I control the show from the speaker view?

Yes. The speaker view sends its keys to the show, so Right, Down, Page Down and Space move forward and Left, Up and Page Up move back from either window. Home, End, B, M and Esc work there too.

Why does the speaker view not open?

Your browser has blocked the pop-up. Allow pop-ups for this site, then click Open speaker view again. If you see The speaker window could not be prepared. Try opening it again., click Open speaker view again.

Can I leave full screen without ending the show?

No. Leaving full screen ends the show, so a show never stays on the screen half exited. Press Esc when you want to stop.

What happens when I go past the last slide?

The show ends. Going forward from the last slide ends it, whether you press a key or click the slide.

How do I jump to slide 12?

Press O, or click All slides in the control bar. In Jump to a slide, click slide 12. To close the list without jumping, press O or Esc.

Can the audience see my speaker notes?

No. Notes appear only in the speaker view, under Speaker notes. To write or change notes, see The deck editor.

Why are the numbers in my show out of date?

Only elements set to When presenting starts refresh when a show starts. Elements set to When the deck opens refresh when you open the deck in the editor, so reopen the deck before you present. Elements set to Only when refreshed by hand keep their saved numbers until you refresh them in the editor. To set the refresh mode, see Fill slides from your data.

Why did my screen go to sleep?

The show asks your browser to keep the screen awake while it runs. Some browsers do not allow this. In that case, change your computer's power settings before you present.

How do I pause on a black screen?

Press B, or click Black the screen in the control bar. To bring the slide back, press B again, or click Show the slide. Clicking the black screen itself moves to the next slide, so use the keyboard or the button.

Why are my transitions and animations not playing?

Reduce motion is on. It is on when your system asks for less motion, or when you pressed M. Press M to turn your own switch off. If your system asks for less motion, motion stays off either way. See Animations and transitions.

Do I need edit rights to present?

No. Present is available to anyone who can open the deck, including people who can only view it. To see who can open a deck, read Publish and share and Slides permissions.
