Diagram layouts

The relationship diagram opens on the built-in Lake Diagram tab; custom layouts let you keep separate arrangements of the same tables. This page covers the layouts panel; for the canvas itself see Relationship diagram, and for Warehouse tables see Relationship diagram.

Open the layouts panel

The panel runs down the left side of the diagram.

Switch between layouts

The built-in Lake Diagram tab is always first, and your custom tabs follow it.

  1. Click a tab to open that layout. Custom tabs show how many tables the layout holds.
  2. Click Lake Diagram to return to the built-in diagram. It keeps the datasource it was on.

The tab list scrolls when it grows. A new layout starts empty and on the All Datasources view, so tables from several datasources can share one arrangement. The built-in Lake Diagram always shows a single datasource.

Create a layout

  1. Click New Layout at the bottom of the tab list.
  2. Type a name in New Layout Name and click Continue, or press Enter.

Continue stays unavailable while the box is empty. Names are trimmed, and no two layouts can share a name (the check ignores case). If the name is taken, the diagram shows "A layout with this name already exists. Please choose a different name.".

The new layout opens straight away, and the diagram shows "Layout created successfully". If the save fails, it shows "Failed to create layout" with the reason.

Rename, duplicate or remove a layout

Right-click a custom tab to open its menu: Rename, Duplicate and Remove, each with its keyboard shortcut beside it.

If a change fails, the diagram shows "Failed to rename layout", "Failed to duplicate layout" or "Failed to delete layout", with the reason underneath.

Remove a table from a layout

  1. On a custom layout, select the table on the canvas.
  2. Click Remove from Layout in its tools.
  3. Confirm with Remove in Remove Table from Layout. The dialog names the table.

The table leaves this layout only. The diagram confirms with "Table deleted from diagram successfully", and with "Table Removed from Layout" when the table node itself is removed. The Lake table and your other layouts are not affected.

What the diagram remembers

Questions, answered

Why was my layout name refused?

No two layouts can share a name, and the check ignores case and trims spaces. If the name is taken, the diagram shows "A layout with this name already exists. Please choose a different name." while creating a layout, or "A tab with this name already exists. Please choose a different name." while renaming one. Choose another name.

Can I copy a layout instead of building it again?

Yes. Right-click the tab and choose Duplicate, or press Alt+Shift+D while the tab is active. The copy keeps the same tables and their positions and is added at the end of the tab list.

What does the Built-in badge on Lake Diagram mean?

Lake Diagram is the diagram's standard view and is part of the page. You cannot rename, duplicate or delete it. It always shows one datasource, and it keeps the datasource it was last on. Every other tab on the strip is a custom layout you own.

Where did the layouts panel go?

It was hidden. Click Show layouts panel at the top left of the canvas to bring it back. The diagram remembers whether you left the panel open.

What does the count on a layout tab show?

The number of tables in that layout.

Does the diagram remember where I put the tables?

Yes. Positions are kept per layout: each custom layout keeps its own arrangement, and the built-in Lake Diagram keeps an arrangement per datasource. You do not have to save anything.

Can I change the order of the tabs?

Yes. Drag a tab to another position and the new order is kept.

Why did my arrangement reset itself?

The open tab and the built-in diagram's arrangement are kept in your browser for 30 days, and a DataMind update can clear them. Your layouts and their table positions are saved separately and are not affected; reopen the layout and arrange the tables again.

Do I need to save a layout?

No. Creating, renaming, duplicating and deleting commit right away, and table positions are saved as you drag. There is no Save button on the panel.
