Reports and semantic models live in workspaces. When an item needs to sit somewhere else, move it to another workspace or folder, or make a copy and leave the original in place. For the workspaces panel itself, see Workspaces, folders and the home page; for removing items, see Delete reports, models and folders.
Choose where "{name}" should live.Pick a workspace first., and Workspace root means the workspace's top level.A few things to know:
The item is already in this workspace. One hard rule decides these moves: an item that lives in a role workspace cannot move into a personal workspace, your own included. The reason sits on the blocked destination:
This report lives in a role workspace, so it cannot move into a personal one.
A semantic model gets the same rule without the copy advice: This semantic model lives in a role workspace, so it cannot move into a personal one.
A destination that cannot take your item is shown greyed out with its reason beside it, so you can read why before you commit. A blocked move never fails silently.
Open the item's menu and choose Make a copy.
For a report:
A new report based on "{name}".{name} (copy). Change it if you like. For a semantic model:
A new semantic model based on "{name}".Reports are not copied. Tests, documentation and row-level security are. When a copy finishes, a message reads Copy created with "{name}" is ready. If parts of a model copy could not be completed, a Copy created with issues dialog opens instead.
A report that lives in a role workspace cannot move into a personal workspace, and that includes your own. The dialog shows the reason on the blocked destination and offers Make a copy instead: the copy is a new report owned by you, so it can sit in your personal workspace while the original stays where it is.
Not by moving it. The dialog shows This semantic model lives in a role workspace, so it cannot move into a personal one., and it has no copy shortcut. Close the dialog and choose Make a copy from the item menu; the copy dialog asks for its own name, owner role, data mode and destination.
That destination cannot take the item, and its reason is shown beside the option: it may be another user's personal workspace, the one-way rule may apply, or the item may already be there (The item is already in this workspace.). A workspace whose role is deactivated does not appear in the list at all.
No. Another user's personal workspace is never a destination, for anyone. You can open what is already in it; its option stays disabled with This is another user personal workspace.
Yes. A copy is a new report owned by you, and its destination list allows a personal workspace even when the original could not move there.
No. The copy dialog says exactly what comes along: Reports are not copied.
The Name field is prefilled as {name} (copy), the original name plus a (copy) suffix. Change it in the dialog before you confirm.
Moving a semantic model checks that the model has not changed since you opened the dialog. If it has, you are asked to reload the newer version or to overwrite it with your move; overwriting keeps your version. Report moves skip this check.
Open an item's menu from its row in the workspaces panel or from the actions button on a card on the home page. On a semantic model, Make a copy is also under More actions in its header. See Workspaces, folders and the home page for the panel, and Delete reports, models and folders for removing items.
Yes. Pick a Workspace first, then a Folder; Workspace root means the workspace's top level. The same two steps appear in the copy dialogs.
