Image tiles
An image tile puts a picture on a report page: a logo, a backdrop or any other file the report holds. It shows one file from the report's assets, with a fit, a focal point and a description for people who cannot see it.
Add an image to a page
- Select Edit in the report header. It appears only when you can edit the report; for saving, see Build a report.
- In the Visualizations panel, pick Image under Text & media. The tile lands on the canvas as a draft.
- Choose the file it shows from the report's assets. Files live with the report, and the tile refers to one by its name; see Report assets.
- Set the fit, the focal point, the opacity, the corner radius, the border and the alt text, as below.
- Select Done to leave edit mode.
Choose the file and its fit
- The tile names one file from the report's assets, and the name is matched without regard to case.
- Fit decides how the picture meets the tile:
| Fit | What it does |
|---|
| Contain | Shows the whole picture inside the tile. The default. |
| Cover | Fills the tile and cuts off whatever overflows. |
| Fill | Stretches the picture to the tile. |
| None | Draws the picture at its own size. |
- A saved fit that cannot be read falls back to Contain.
- Focal point keeps a point of the picture in view when the tile has to crop it. Set it as an x and a y between 0 and 100; Cover and None keep that point on screen.
- A tile can carry a second file for dark themes: set a dark-theme variant and the report shows it instead of the main file when the report renders dark. Clear the variant and the main file shows again. How a report opens in dark is on Themes and the report logo.
Adjust how the picture sits
- Opacity fades the picture; it runs from 0 to 100, is rounded to a whole number, and starts at 100. A value that cannot be read falls back to 100.
- Corner radius rounds the tile's corners; without a radius they stay square.
- Border draws a line around the tile. It needs both a colour and a width; when either is missing the border is not drawn.
Write the alt text
- Alt text describes the picture for people who cannot see it. It holds up to 500 characters.
- The report flags an image without alt text: ... shows an image without alt text. Add a short description and the flag goes.
- The report flags alt text over 500 characters: ... image alt text is longer than 500 characters. Shorten it to 500 characters or fewer.
When the file is missing or is not an image
- If the tile names a file the report does not hold, the report says: ... references the asset "logo.png", which the report does not have. Add the file to the report's assets, or pick a file that is there.
- If the named file is not an image, the report says: ... shows the asset "logo.png", which is not an image. Image tiles draw PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF and SVG files; pick one of those.
What an image tile does not do
- It reads no fields, so wells, sorts and summaries do not apply to it; it draws a file the report holds.
- It runs no query, so it has no row limits and a refresh has nothing to re-run on it.
Questions, answered
Where do the image files come from?
From the report's assets: files are uploaded to the report, not to one tile, and a tile refers to one by its name. The name is matched without regard to case. See Report assets.
What happens if the file is missing from the report?
The report says ... references the asset "logo.png", which the report does not have. Add the file to the report's assets again, or pick a file that is there.
Why does the report say the file is not an image?
The named file is not a type an image tile can draw. Image tiles draw PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF and SVG files; pick one of those.
What is the default fit?
Contain: the whole picture shows inside the tile. It is also what a saved fit falls back to when it cannot be read.
What does the focal point change?
It keeps a chosen point of the picture in view when the tile has to crop it, as an x and a y between 0 and 100. Cover and None keep that point on screen.
How do I show another picture in dark mode?
Set a dark-theme variant on the tile: the report shows it instead of the main file when the report renders dark. Clear the variant and the main file shows again.
Can an image tile be empty?
Yes. A tile without a file shows its placeholder until you give it one.
Why does the report warn about alt text?
Alt text describes the picture for people who cannot see it. An image without alt text is flagged with ... shows an image without alt text., and alt text over 500 characters with ... image alt text is longer than 500 characters. Add or shorten the description to clear it.
Does an image tile load data?
No. It never runs a query; it draws a file the report holds, so fields, sorts and row limits do not apply to it.
