Chart limits
Every visual on a DataPrism report loads a bounded amount of data, and General > Limits sets the size of that load. This page lists the limit rows per visual type, their defaults and maxima, and the rules for changing a value. For what a tile shows when a limit is reached, see Chart states and rendering rules.
Open the limits
- Select Edit in the report header. It appears only when you can edit the report; saving is covered on Build a report.
- Select one visual on the page. The side panel shows its Fields, Visual and General tabs.
- Open General and find the Limits section. It lists one row per limit the visual's type has: the value in use, a field, and under it a help line or a note.
Changes apply as you make them and are saved with the report. Every change re-runs the visual.
The limit rows
| Visual | Limit | Default | Maximum |
|---|
| Bar, Combo | Categories per page | 20 | 1,000 |
| Line | Points per page | 100 | 5,000 |
| Bar, Combo, Line | Rows per load with a legend | 20,000 | 100,000 |
| Pie, Donut | Slices per page | 50 | 500 |
| Table | Rows per page | 50 | 1,000 |
| Matrix | Rows per load | 20,000 | 100,000 |
| Funnel | Stages | 30 | 250 |
| Key tree | Children per expansion | 10 | 500 |
| Slicer, Slicer group | Values per load | 1,000 | 10,000 |
| Custom visual | Rows | 1,000 | 100,000 |
| Map | Points | 50,000 | 100,000 |
| Map with a geometry field | Shapes | 10,000 | 25,000 |
- KPI and Cards carry no rows: their General tab has no Limits section.
- On a Map, the label follows the fields: Points without a geometry field, Shapes with one.
- On a Custom visual, Rows starts from the visual's own declared limit when it has one (1,000 otherwise), and accepts up to 100,000.
- The maximum is the most that visual type may ask for. A Top N rule takes over a visual's page size and stays inside the same maximum; see Filters, slicers and interactions.
- One row per type, with the same numbers, is also listed on Visuals.
Which row applies
- On Bar, Combo and Line, the page row (Categories per page or Points per page) applies while Legend is empty. With a field in Legend, rows split by legend value and Rows per load with a legend takes over.
- On a Matrix, Rows per load applies while Rows or Columns hold a field. With neither, the grid has nothing to group.
- On a Slicer, Values per load applies to the List, Tile and Dropdown styles. A date style does not list values, and a slicer bound to a field parameter lists the parameter's entries instead.
A row that does not apply keeps its value, disables its field and shows a note in place of the help line: Applies when the Legend well is empty, Applies when the Legend well holds a field, Applies when Rows or Columns hold a field, Applies to the list, tile and dropdown styles, or A field-parameter slicer runs no query.
Change a value
- Typing alone does not commit. The value lands when you press Enter or click away, and the visual runs again with it. Escape reverts, and an empty or non-numeric entry is ignored.
- A value is rounded and kept between 1 and the maximum; a number above the maximum is brought down to it.
- The help line under an active field reads Default 20 · max 1,000: the first number is the value the visual uses when no one has changed it, and the second is the most the row accepts.
- Setting a row back to its default clears the change. The reset control beside a changed value (its tooltip names the default, for example Reset to default (20)) restores the default.
- A saved value that is missing or unusable returns to the row's default, such as Stages back to 30 and Children per expansion back to 10.
- On a draft that has not been saved yet, the Stages and Children per expansion rows are read-only.
When a limit is reached
- A tile that left rows out draws what it has and says so. A capped funnel counts its stages, for example Showing first 30 of 412 stages; a chart with more legend values than it draws counts its series, for example Showing first 8 of 40 series. Hover a badge to see the way out: usually raising the limit or adding a filter.
- A paged tile says how much of the result each page holds. A matrix or a legend-split chart loads in windows and can add more while more rows remain; the windows stop after about a million rows in total, 50 windows at the default 20,000 and 10 at the maximum 100,000. Export then gets the full result, not just the loaded rows; see Export reports and data.
- Whether a result counts as cut short is decided by the run, not by comparing the counts on screen. Every state a capped tile can show is listed on Chart states and rendering rules, including the page footer it adds and the ways it offers to load more.
Questions, answered
What is the difference between the Limit strip on a tile and General > Limits?
The Limit strip in a tile's footer changes the page size of the view you are reading now, and Reset to default in the report footer brings the saved view back. The value under General > Limits is the one the visual saves; printed pages, picture exports, subscriptions and version previews use that value.
Why did my value not apply after I typed it?
Typing alone does not commit. Press Enter or click away to apply the value; Escape reverts it. An empty or non-numeric entry is ignored, and the field snaps back to the current value.
What happens if I type a value above the maximum?
It is brought down to the row's maximum when it commits. The field keeps values between 1 and the maximum, so a bar chart's Categories per page stops at 1,000 and a funnel's Stages at 250.
What does the line under a limit field mean?
It reads Default followed by the value the visual uses when no one has changed it, and max followed by the most the row accepts, for example Default 20 · max 1,000. A row that does not apply shows a note there instead.
How do I put a limit back to its default?
Use the reset control beside the field; it appears once the value differs from the default, and its tooltip names the default, for example Reset to default (20). Entering the default value itself clears the change too.
Which limit applies when I add a Legend field?
Rows per load with a legend takes over on a Bar, Combo or Line chart: rows split by legend value, so the page rows stop applying and their field shows the note Applies when the Legend well is empty. Remove the legend field and the page rows return.
How much data can a visual load in total?
A paged visual shows one page at a time. A matrix or a legend-split chart keeps what it loads in windows, up to about a million rows: 50 windows at the default 20,000, and 10 at the maximum 100,000. Past that, loading stops and Export gets the full result.
Does a KPI or Cards tile have limit rows?
No. A KPI shows one value and Cards shows one card per measure, so there is nothing to size, and General > Limits shows no section on them. Every other visual type carries at least one limit row.
