Chats shared with you

When someone shares a chat with you from their DataMind Oda, it reaches you as a read-only copy under Shared with me. You can read it, download the files it carries, and continue the work in a chat of your own. To share a chat you own, see Chat sharing and branches.

Read a chat shared with you

Chats shared with you are listed under Shared with me in the sidebar. Open one to read the copy.

A shared chat is a copy, not a live view: it holds the conversation as it was when the sender shared or updated it, and it never follows the sender's chat on its own.

Continue a shared chat in your own Oda

  1. Open the chat from Shared with me.
  2. Choose Continue in my Oda.
  3. Choose an existing folder for the copy. Oda refuses anything else with Choose an existing folder to continue the conversation in.
  4. Oda saves the share's files into that folder and opens a new chat, titled with the share title.

What the new chat carries:

Your copy is your own: continuing changes neither the shared copy nor the sender's chat.

Questions, answered

Where do chats shared with me appear?

Under Shared with me in the sidebar. Open one from there to read the copy.

Can I send messages in a chat shared with me?

No. The shared copy is read-only, so you cannot write in it. Continue the chat in your own Oda to get a copy you can keep working in.

Does a shared chat keep up with the sender's changes?

No. A share holds the conversation as it was when the sender shared or updated it; it never follows the sender's chat on its own. To bring in newer messages and files, the sender updates the share: see Chat sharing and branches.

Can I download a file from a shared chat?

Yes. Choose Download on the file and Oda saves it into your Downloads folder. If a file with that name is already there, the new copy gets a fresh name such as report (2).xlsx; nothing is replaced.

What do I need to continue a shared chat?

An existing folder to keep the copy and its files in, for example a workspace folder. Continue in my Oda refuses anything else with Choose an existing folder to continue the conversation in.

What does my continued chat look like?

A new chat, titled with the share title. The shared conversation becomes its history as completed turns, with its tool and attachment lines kept; if the copy begins with Oda's reply, the chat opens with Continue from this shared conversation.

Why can't I continue a chat shared from a newer version?

The share was made with a newer version of DataMind Oda than the one you run, so it cannot be continued here: This conversation was shared from a newer version of DataMind Oda. Update DataMind Oda, then continue the chat again.

Why does a shared chat say it has no messages to continue?

The share holds no messages to copy into a new chat; Oda refuses with This shared conversation has no messages to continue.

Why can't I open a chat that was shared with me?

The sender may have stopped the share or removed you from it: Oda reads This shared conversation does not exist or is not shared with you. Ask them to share the chat with you again.

Why did a file fail to download?

Oda could not save the file to your computer and reads The file could not be downloaded. Try the download again; if it keeps failing, ask the sender to update the share.
