Funnel visual
A funnel shows the steps of a process as stages sized by their value, with the conversion between them. Use it for a sales pipeline, a checkout flow or any process that narrows from a large start to a small result.
Build a funnel
- In the report header, select Edit. It appears only if you can edit the report; saving and versions are covered on Build a report.
- In the Visualizations panel, select Funnel from the Charts group. The full catalogue is on Visuals.
- On the Fields tab, drag the field that names each stage into Stage, and the measure that sizes the stages into Value.
- Each value of the Stage field becomes one stage, drawn as a column sized by its Value. The columns are joined into one flowing shape that narrows step by step.
Order and size of the stages
- The largest stage fills the available height; every other stage is sized by its share of that scale.
- By default, stages are ordered by value, from the largest to the smallest.
- When an explicit sort is set on the visual, or a reader applies one, the stages keep the order the query returns instead of falling by value.
- With Compare on, the fall is by the first side's values.
Read the conversion
- Hover a stage to open a tooltip with the stage's name, its Value, Of previous (against the stage before it) and Of first (against the first stage). The Of first row appears from the second stage onward.
- Where the tile has room, the value and conversion figures also show on the shape itself.
- The footer under the chart reads Overall conversion · 250 of 1,000: the last stage's value compared with the first stage's. Hover it to see the path behind the figure; a dash appears when the conversion is undefined. Negative stage values count as zero for this figure. A funnel with fewer than two stages has no footer.
- On the Visual tab, Show conversion from first shows or hides the footer. The other Visual tab sections are covered on Format a visual.
The stage limit and the cap badge
- The Stages limit under General > Limits decides how many stages a funnel draws. It starts at 30 and goes up to 250.
- When the result holds more stages, the tile draws what fits within the limit and shows a badge: Showing first 30 of 412 stages, or the shorter Showing first 30 stages when no total is available. Hovering the badge says Raise the stage limit in General > Limits or add a filter to see the rest.
How a funnel draws on a small tile
- When stage columns fall under 56 px wide, or the plot area under 90 px tall, the value and conversion figures on the shape are hidden. Hover a stage to read the numbers instead.
- Stage names under the axis are thinned out: each name drawn keeps at least 48 px of space. A long name wraps to two lines and is then truncated; hover a name to read it in full.
- When the data changes, the funnel shape morphs to the new values; a device set to reduce motion shows the new shape without the animation.
Filter the page from a stage
- Click a stage to select it for the rest of the page. Click the same stage again to clear the selection.
- Hold Ctrl (Windows and Linux) or Cmd (macOS) while clicking to add stages to the selection.
- The selection then behaves like any other cross-filter; see Cross-filtering and selections.
Questions, answered
My funnel shows only 30 stages. How do I see more?
Raise Stages under General > Limits, up to 250, or add a filter to narrow the field. The badge's tooltip suggests the same two moves.
How is the overall conversion calculated?
It compares the last stage's value with the first stage's, for example 250 of 1,000. Negative stage values count as zero here, and a dash appears when the conversion is undefined.
What do "Of previous" and "Of first" mean?
Both are stage figures in the hover tooltip: Of previous measures the stage against the one before it, and Of first measures it against the first stage. The Of first row appears from the second stage onward.
Can I change the order of the stages?
By default they run from the largest value to the smallest. Set an explicit sort on the visual to use that order instead, or let a reader sort the tile; with Compare on, the order follows the first side's values.
Why is one stage named "(Blank)"?
Its Stage value is empty in the data. Empty stage members are drawn with the placeholder (Blank).
Why are some stage names missing along the bottom?
The axis thins names out so each name on screen keeps at least 48 px. A name that still does not fit wraps to two lines and is then cut short; hover it to read the full name.
Why does my funnel not show the values on the shape?
The tile is too small: the figures are hidden when stage columns fall under 56 px wide or the plot area under 90 px tall. Widen the tile, or hover a stage to read its value.
Can I turn the overall conversion footer off?
Yes. On the Visual tab, turn Show conversion from first off.
Can a funnel compare two periods side by side?
Yes. Turn Compare on and choose how the two sides share the tile under Split: Auto, Side by side or Stacked. See Compare mode.
