Several table popups carry an AI Assistant button in their toolbar. Click it, describe in your own words what you want the AI to do, and send the prompt: the popup runs its AI action with your description. The popover works the same everywhere, while each popup may name its pieces differently and prefill the prompt for the task at hand.
Open the assistant
The button sits in the popup's toolbar. Hover it to read its name, AI Assistant.
When the action behind it cannot run right now, the button is disabled and its tooltip reads AI Assistant is unavailable; some popups name their own reason instead.
While an ask is running, the button shows a spinner.
Click the button to open the popover. Its prompt box takes focus, so you can start typing straight away.
Write your prompt
Type what the AI should do into the box; its placeholder reads Enter your prompt... and the box grows with your text.
If the popup prefilled the box with a ready-made prompt, edit it, replace it with your own, or send it as it is.
Press Enter or click the send button.
Keys and states:
Enter sends the prompt, Shift+Enter adds a line and Esc closes the popover; the hint under the box lists all three.
The send button stays off while an ask is running, and while the box is empty unless the helper can run without a description. Its tooltip reads Type a description first when nothing is ready to send, or Send (Enter) once it is.
The close button's tooltip reads Close (Esc).
Dictate instead of typing
The microphone starts dictation. Its tooltip reads Dictate, and Stop dictation while you speak; click it again to stop.
Words appear in the box as you speak, and a small panel shows the latest words while they are still being recognised.
Dictation stops when you send the prompt. The microphone is disabled when speech is not available and while an ask is running.
The Speech language picker sets the language dictation listens in. It starts on en-US, and a language you pick is kept when you close and reopen the assistant.
Send the prompt and read the result
While the ask runs, the popover shows Generating... next to the microphone, and the send button shows a spinner.
A successful ask closes the popover on its own. A failed ask keeps it open, so you can change the prompt and try again.
Note
The assistant proposes; you decide. Its result arrives as an unsaved change in the surface you opened it from, and nothing is applied until you save it there.
Where the result lands
The same popover appears in several places, each with its own words:
A Lake table's Columns step: Generate column comments with AI writes a description for each column that does not have one, and Suggest primary key with AI proposes the key columns. Both wait in the grid as unsaved changes. See Set up a table's columns.
A dictionary's Data Mapping step: Fill with AI completes the rows you selected from your description. See Dictionaries.
A static table's Data Mapping step: Fill or add rows with AI fills the rows you select, or adds new rows when you select none. See Static tables.
The measure editor (DataPrism): the same box is the AI measure popover, opened with Ctrl+Shift+M. Describe the measure and the AI writes the SQL; a broken measure is repaired there with Fix with AI. See Measures.
Questions, answered
What does the AI Assistant do in a table popup?
It takes the description you type and runs the popup's AI action with it. What comes back depends on where you opened it: column descriptions, a suggested primary key, filled rows or a drafted measure. The result lands in the surface you were working in, as an unsaved change you review before saving.
Why is the AI Assistant greyed out?
The action behind it cannot run at that moment, so the button is disabled. Hover it and the tooltip reads AI Assistant is unavailable, or the popup names its own reason instead.
Does Enter send the prompt or add a line?
Enter sends the prompt when the send button is on; Shift+Enter adds a line. Esc closes the popover.
Why did the popover stay open after I clicked Send?
The ask failed, so the popover stays open for you to change the prompt and try again. A successful ask closes it on its own.
Can I dictate the prompt instead of typing it?
Yes. Click the microphone and speak; its tooltip reads Dictate, and Stop dictation while it runs. Dictation stops when you send, and the microphone is disabled when speech is not available and while an ask is running.
Which language does dictation listen in?
Choose it under Speech language. It starts on en-US, and a language you pick is kept when you close and reopen the assistant.
Does my prompt stay when I close the popover?
Text you typed is not kept: closing the popover drops it. When the popup supplies a ready-made prompt, that text is restored the next time you open the popover.
Does the AI change anything on its own?
No. What the AI produces arrives as an unsaved change; nothing is applied until you save it yourself.
What does "Generating..." mean?
An ask is in flight. The popover shows Generating... while it waits, and the send button becomes a spinner. You cannot start a second ask until it finishes.
